My philosophy is on the contrary - you buy a fast lens, you learn to use it wide open. Else you are not getting the most out of it. A lot of times its really the lighting more than the lens that decides if you pic pops. And something maybe less emphasized - I love round oof light source rather than some angular shaped ones which happens when you stop a lens down from wide open.
