Pentax/Ricoh Monthly Outing - Funan Anime Cosplay event photos sharing

haha...this is what happen when too many people try to shoot them at the same time..u get the cosplayers looking at different cams...
I was trying my best to get their attention but most of the time I failed! The reason is because I used too small and ugly Ricoh GXR M camera with the little Pentax FA 43/1.9 Silver (without the hood)! It is even worst when I rarely attached the flash on to make my gear seem to be more pro! Lesson learnt to me, I think! :( :)

haha..i actually quite like ur combi of GXR with silver 43..looks mean..the flash will make it look abit unbalanced tho..

what i learn from those who shared here before is to let the other shooters first and then catch their attention by asking if they can move to other area because the background is nicer..at the new area, they will tend to look at your camera since you are the one who ask for permission to shoot them...

this shot is off focus because i was using ranchy's FA24 and did not make any adjustment prior to it..(new lesson learn..to always check for AF accuracy when borrow lens..or else switch to manual focus :P )

I think for those who have the K3, we need to test the lens to see if needs adjustment before we shoot any real subjects. I have had to adjust my DA*16-50 and my Sigma 70-200 APO DG. You saw my results of not adjusting in the sharing thread.

Ah, thanks for your hint on how to get their attention! I'll take note on it for the next time. I really don't know how to start actually cause this is my first time taking photo in an event which so many photographers around at the same time.

Another way is to make your way through the wall of photographers and get as close to the cosplayers as your framing allows, and give them a wave. They would tend to respond better. That's if you're shy to bring them to another area to shoot. Or mounting a flash with a big light bouncer/modifier helps to get their attention better as well. :bsmilie:

Was with my friend during the event, but didn't manage to see you guys. Spotted more pentax users on Sat though.

Nice stuff!
And those sure are good tips.

Like the processing on the group shots. (ie. the color and the vignette )

Then I will be totally out! :))

Woah... Bro... If ur look is out, then I need to dig a hole n stuff my head in. :(

Anyway, also learn some similar lesson as the rest here. Initially I just followed mass of photographers to shoot n ended can't get eye contact from cosplayer also. Ended up I just walk off n find cosplayers still haven't poach by any n not only can have their attention, but ended up turn tide. After I shots mine, some masses come over n I go off to hunt next one. So the cycle keep recurring. But sad part is I lost Hatake Kakashi (that's when I first decided stop following crowd :( ) Despite ended with gd strategy, my shots still sucks. Lol

I also join group to shoot, I very shy to ask model pose. But then if I do they find me too handsome to reject hahaha, even those sit down at their cafe area where an auntie keep waving no photography but the model look up smile and I snap and wave a thanks goodbye

Just tell yourself two things:

1. Cosplayers came in knowing full well they'll be photographed
2. Cosplayers want to look good in the photographs, too

Keep those two in mind, it'll be easier to ask for a photo. :) Also, if you ask, it's easier to ask them to strike different poses, too. Of course, obvious etiquette applies (don't ask if they're in a hurry, eating, etc).

For me, the hardest part is if the cosplayer is in a group, and they're all from different series. I prefer to shoot them solo (especially considering the focal length I use), and they tend to prefer group shots during that case. Boo.

I need learn how to make them pose nicely. That's what's stopping me from asking more. :sticktong Also kinda hard to ask for email to send pics. Feels creepy lol. I just put it out there and hope they notice and ask for it. Haha :p Maybe when I get my own lightstand (probably never).

agree with what you say...they are usually prepared to be photographed so its really easy to ask them...btw..u put it on the web..they will just right click and save picture..no need to ask you for permission ;p

I put low res with watermark on web. if they ask, i give hi res without watermark :p

Keep the photos flowing: :)

Speaking from experience ah! :bsmilie:

I know your pain. :bsmilie: I usually rely on other photographers to pose the cosplayer, then grab their attention after the photographer is done and grab a few shots. Where sharing the photos is concerned, most people either upload it to their fb profile or fb page and tag the cosplayers from there. In that way, they can get the photos, and you can also get some recognition from other cosplayers as well. :)

Nice stuff!

Thanks! Glad you liked it! :)
