Not too sure who is this statue commemorating. But it sure looks nice at night.

This is taken at Nijmah Square. The clock tower can be seen from whichever direction you approach the square.
Time doesn't stand still. Neither are all the people around it.

#31 Happy New Year

I mentioned that Beirut is serious and sombre. So I shall take a break and travel down south to Sidon (Saida).
The mood changes immediately. Happy 2011. Wow time flies. Now is already Feb.

#31 The Sea Castle

The main attraction of Sidon is this Sea Castle, built by the Crusaders in 1228. It is
supposed to be a beautiful castle but was destroyed by the Mamluks. Little has been done to
preserve and restore the remains.

The doorman collected 40,000 Lebanese pound (~S$34) but the site is poorly maintained.
Gaffiti are on the plaques and the wooden railings that have dilapidated is left as it is. Hope the
entrance fees collected is to restore the Sea Castle at some point in time and not to line the pockets
of some people.

Thanks for putting a name to the statue. Lebanon remains an area of conflict with
strong influences from neighbouring countries.

#33 Bab Al-Saray Mosque

Near the Sea Castle is Bab Al-Saray Mosque. This is the oldest mosque in the city, built in 1201. It is said to be beautiful
inside with the largest dome in Sidon, beautiful stone works and an enormous center column made of blackstone imported from Italy. Too bad it
is not opened on the day. From the outside, sure cannot tell that it looks that beautiful. :)

without a free and sovereign state of Palestine in the borders of 1968
there will be no peace in the region!

#34 Boys boys boys

In fact it was a terrible day for me. All the sites were not open the day of my visit. I also couldn't find the Great Omari Mosque.
A very helpful local offered to be my direction guide for free. He walked me to a couple of places and even refuse the tips that I offered.
Too bad he couldn't speak english and I couldn't speak arabic. These boys kind of light up my otherwise uneventful day. I especially like the
"Chief". He speaks english and acts as a translator, and is like the big brother of the group.

The Chief. I think this boy will grow up to be a fine young man. Look at those ears :)

Are you from this region or just interested in the developments? IMO, there are too many parties interested in gaining influences in the many countries in the MENA region. Just look at Egypt, Sudan, Iran. Lebanon is just one of those. If you asked me, there will never be peace in this region.

#37 Making Pizza the old way
5428589817_a40a2283f1_z.jpg

There is an old town souk (market) nearby. Lots of interesting local ways of living. This is no pizza hut
but judging from the number of customers, should be just as good.

This girl is probably the grand daughter of the pizza shop owner. She carries a small bowl of the sweet
pizza sauce and savour it on her way home. When I tried to take her picture, she quickly shun away. Cute and lovely girl.

This one look like curry pok but it is not. It tastes very different, is hard and sweet. Seems like a
popular sweet as many places are selling them.
