Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8

Last week was quoted $1450 with the 14-42 kit lens + freebies offered in Dec promotion.

Thanks, I've just purchased gx8 here in Indonesia. A bit more expensive but come with Indonesia warranty (where I live), Lumix 45-150mm, 16 sdhc, screen protector and a camera pouch.

Hi, can i buy from Japan and register my warranty in Sg?

Nope. Only local sets can reg for sg warranty.

Yeah, that's a very impt point.

So if Panasonic Sg dont accept international warranty.. Why are ppls still buying camera in Japan.
And will they repair it if i buy it from Japan?
What do you mean by ... Panasonic camera bodies from Japan....changed to English?

the menu is all in Japanese. When you scroll to the "language" option in the menu (assuming you can navigate through the Jap words), there is no option to change it to English, you're stuck with Jap language. There's also no firmware or hack that can workaround this. So unless you can read Jap, don't bother buying a Jap set. Resale value is also very badly affected.

If you are talking about panasonic cameras specifically, who are the people buying panasonic cameras from japan? Any examples to share? If you are talking about non-japanese, my guess is they either 1) can read japanese 2) bought by mistake... haha.

If you are talking about cameras in general, I think only Sony and Panasonic are locked into Japanese language. Sometimes they may have export versions that may have English menu option, but those will cost more over the domestic Japanese-only model.

People sometimes willing forgo warranty for price savings. You have to figure out whether it's worth it to you.

Basically, if you walk into a shop to buy a gx8 in japan, you will likely be faced with two options:

1) A domestic model (with only Japanese language option available)
2) International/overseas model, assuming they have it in stock. Shops catered to tourists should have it. (with the option to change language to english and other languages - similar to what you can buy in SG)

The international/overseas model will be more expensive than the domestic one. So at that point, I'm not sure if you will save any money over buying local. If the savings are significant enough for you to forgot local warranty, go ahead.

Panasonic also states on one of their sites:

Please also note that depending on which market the camera was designed for, some language options may not be available. E.G. A camera purchased from Japan may not have an option for English.

Hi guys,
I am trying to do long exposure with my gx 8 12-35mm lens
But I keep trying to figure out how to make my shutter speed lower than 1".
Which mode should I use?
Or can anyone give me a tutorial for gx8.?
Thanks a lot.

PASM all can. Not electronic (silent mode) shutter as this restricts to 1sec of shutter speed slowest. If it's too bright, even at F22, and lowest ISO, your speed still show faster than 1sec, means you will need a neutral density (ND) filter to reduce the light. And if you use a filter, and it's too dark to meter/focus properly, you should do focus manually first, then put on filter. As for metering, use the Aperture mode reading at the aperture you have, multiply with the ND filter multiplier, put on M mode then use the same aperture, but with the multiplied speed. Test shoot, and fine tune appropriately.

I generally use M(anual) mode and set the shutter speed to B(ulb). It's very flexible in this mode, but it may take some experimentation, depending on your skill level.

Thanks guys, especially wonglp. With the electronic silent shutter mode off, I was able to get more than 1".
Btw, when using the M mode the exposure cannot be changed right?

You are right to say the silent mode must be set to "off" but Ryan says devileagleclaws must be on( using ) electronic silent mode. :)

Thanks for this info, wonglp. I didn't know about this too.
