Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm F1.7 ASPH - Impressions ...

yes hehe....bought for my wife with a 17mm 1.8 for her to take pictures of the baby when i am not around. small and enjoyable to use!

Ric, I already returned the lens ... Hey, you have a GM1???:bigeyes:

I also say ...

Excellent pics Hjbyeo!!!

Continuing hjbyeo's excellent thread, had been holding the 15/1.7 for a week, will post some shots to share as well as thoughts. Here's some product shots to begin with:

Paired with Panasonic GX7 thanks to the loan set from Panasonic Singapore.

Front view with the metallic hood. Being bayonet mount, the front ring needs to be removed.

Top View

Side view without lens hood.

Personally feel the GX7 with 15 is handsome, while GM1 will look chic.

This lens has blazing fast AF, silent focusing. So snappy with GX7, especially for kids shots, I just had to set face detection on, and pretty much snap and go. All shots ooc jpeg, unless stated otherwise. The aperture ring control makes it fast and easy to change aperture on the fly.

At F1.7, ISO800, 1/20s

At F1.7, ISO2000, 1/60s.

Distortions looks very well controlled here, though jpeg files the distortion are corrected via software. It hards to see a difference (at least for me) the Raw file and this jpeg equivalent shot.

1/125s, F5.0, ISO200.

1/60s, F7.1, ISO1000

The focal length of 15mm, is rather versatile. For street shots, group shots, some landscapes, food shot with some crop can be useful too. For it's 15mm wideness and x2 crop of m43, deep depth of field is sometimes to the advantage even when using it for food and street. For portraits of group shots, though it will be hard to achieve shallow depth of field.

F2.2, ISO1000, 1/15s. Cropped and increase exposure

F2.5, ISO400, 1/40s. Cropped

F1.7, ISO250, 1/60scat portrait, shallow depth of field possible but have to stay quite close to subject. ooc jpeg

F1.7, ISO500, 1/60s, ooc jpeg

Had a beautiful sunset today, had a chance to be at Gardens by the bay, here's a shot at F1.8. ISO3200. Lightroom converted Raw shot with some minor tweaks, noise, highlights and curves, colours. handheld 1/60s.

100% cropped shot. Useable?

A quick chroma aberration test using jpeg files.

Left is F5.0 shot, right is F1.7 shot. As can see, at wide open, there's apparent CA can be seen, and this is already jpeg. However, if stopped down, F5.0 as seen, the CA is gone. Certainly, CA can be easily corrected on post in Lightroom. And F1.7 is probably not the setting one would normally use at such contrasty situation. It's there though, and for those who use Olympus m43 cameras, would have more CA as it's not corrected in body.

Excellent shot and handheld! Now I am tempted to get this lens!

thanks for dropping by bro. it is tempting indeed! Will share some starburst shots, Bernard shared an example as well, I just had to test it myself, it's very good, better than any of the zooms (P7-14/P12-35/P12-40) for m43. ;)

A shot of MCE, coupled on an Olympus E-M10, was testing it with live composite of EM10 as well as the starburst of this particular lens. One thing is the aperture ring doesn't work on the Olympus camera, hopefully Olympus will update that as it's really great to have the ability to use the aperture ring which is faster to change than using the dial. It's hard to get good starburst with most of the zoom lenses even the good ones (Panasonic 7-14/4, Panasonic 12-35/2.8, Olympus 12-40)

At F11, the starburst gets prominent, however, with m43 sensor, diffraction does set in rather early like F8 or so, hence usually I would limit aperture to max F13 and not smaller. Here's 2 shots at F11 & F13.

At F11.

At F13

This is so cute!

Exactly, got starburst!

Just a few thoughts, which is similar to hjbyeo's summary earlier.

Likes:
- Sharp lens, perhaps sharper than Olympus 17mm/1.8 at wide open
- aperture ring control, much faster than using dials
- nice built, light and small
- very good against flare
- super fast AF, be it Pana/Oly m43 recent bodies
- well damped manual focus ring
- got nice hood! Olympus 17/1.8 doesn't come with one, and the hoods aren't cheap either, though one will argue that Panaleica 15 is more expensive
- nice starburst :)
- well controlled distortions

Dislikes:
- aperture ring can't be controlled from Olympus m43 bodies. (do hope for a firmware to have it)
- no distance markers for hyper focusing...although the AF is really fast that this may not really be an issue. but still, for some older m43 bodies, this will be good.
- quite a bit of CA wide open. though if one doesn't shoot high contrast with 1.7 it should be alright.

Had a short trip to Krabi, sharing some street shots, a really lovely combi with GX7. Mostly i have the GX7+Pana 15/1.7 using a Peak Design capture pro clip on the side on my belt for quick setup, and a tele with Olympus EM10 on a strap, serves my street photography needs.

All jpegs, no editing
