Panasonic GH4K

Gh4 has no 30 min limit on video recording outside of EU

Just wondering, it you get it only for 1080p, at 1080p can record at 4:2:2 ?

4:2:2/10bit is only available via an external recorder. Internal codec to SD is 4:2:0/8bit (from 4:2:2 source).

A 1080p recorded at 4.4.2, how much more space it requires ? not 45gb for one hour, i hope !

There's no 4:4:2. Also, I think that quote about 45GB/hr was for 4K @ 4:2:0/8bit/100Mbps/IPB recorded internally to SD card.

If you're going for 4:4:2 with the YAGH, then it depends on what you're recording to. Atomos Ninja 2 specs quotes approx 100GB/hr for ProRes HQ (10-bit, 220Mbps).

If for some reason you want to mess about with recording uncompressed stuff (1080p/24fps @ 4:2:2/10bit) with something like a Blackmagic Design Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, be prepared for at least 448GB/hr ;p(according to this calculator)

One thing to note is that the footage from the Yucatan video shot on Gh4 isn't as clean and sharp as compared to the Sony AX100 ... I'm not sure if the videographer "Bryan" had trouble setting the focus or something else happened.

Waiting to see other footages to make decisions ... Comparing side by side, its almost seems like the Gh4 footage is alittle muddy (especially the aerial footages & areas like 1.25min and 1.59min)

An important scene is at 0.22 (for the ax100 clip), see how crisp the sheeps look ... I can't find any image close to this on the Gh4 "yet".

(*Remember to switch both to 2160p or 4k quality)

Difficult to compare compression artifacts on Youtube
GH4 has a larger sensor and shallower depth of field so some parts of the image may be a little soft especially when flown on a octocopter.
Anyway the GH4's bitrate is much higher and the codec is full intra.
From what I can perceive GH4's dynamic range is conspicuously better than the AX100 which still has the telltale digital video look.
Some parts of the Yucatan video, on the other hand looks remarkably like film.
But I'm getting both as they serve different purpose.

I wanted to say the exact same thing! lol

External 12V needed for XLR module? Bugger! AFAIK, Canon and Sony XLR modules all powered from the internal camera battery...

So you are getting the GH4 Bamboopictures ? Do post some sample or video about the camera when you get it. I cant afford this camera but would love to see your inputs

And it becomes another BMCC if u rig it all up. External power is so messy. Guess its main use is for 4k in 8bit 4:2:0 in a light weight unit.

If one wants 10bit 4:2:2 solely, maybe should wait a little longer to see if there is any upcoming cameras that records 10bit 4:2:2 4k in prores HQ without external power and doesn't cost $25k.

I will get the GH4 cos I'm still on GH2. But I have to wait and see for the breakout box. I agree with XSenseX on the heft of external 12V batteries.
That's another set of hassles with chargers, cables, battery plates, mounts, cages... If the 3.5mm input is good enough, maybe I'll make do with just the GH4 body.
I'll still be keeping a close watch on NAB. Who knows, maybe a 4K APS-C Alpha from Sony? At least, their multi-interface hotshoe XLR implementation does not require external power.

Blackmagic has just announce a price cut on the 4k BMCC ... Obviously a reaction to the new 4K GH4 which only cost $1999.
It has gone from $3999 to $2999 ... Thats huge

Now i'm waiting for Canon to do the same unless they wish to be stubborn and kill off all their C100-C500 + 1DC series.

C100 would be irresistible if it were around SGD3500!

Agree with $3500sgd. And I'll say goodbye to my 5d3.

I've already invested heavily in M43 lens for my gh3 so it will be a good upgrade from 5d3 + gh3 into c100 + gh4.

Comeon canon.

Canon C100 is APS-C system ?

Canon C100 is APS-C system ?

Yeah ... but with the quality of a 4k sensor ... it beats the **** out of the 5d3 including low light (even when its not FF) ...

No issue with crop factor, we can easily use 17-55 2.8 OR 16-35 2.8 if needed. Tokina 11-17 if really need super wide ... 8mm fisheye also available.

C100 has a super 35mm sensor.

Eduardo Angel (@EA_Photo) GH4 field test:

7 things we discovered after shooting 4K with the GH4. You won’t like #4.

As I mentioned in my previous article about the GH4, I’ve had the double privilege to field test prerelease versions of both the GH3 and the GH4 for Panasonic.

The invitation to perform the field test arrived quite suddenly, with multiple commitments for Fashion Week already in place and nasty weather that didn’t really allow access to tried and true locations.

4. Storage
Regarding memory cards, we were ALSO testing a pre-production version of a SanDisk. The GH4 didn’t like the SanDisk 95mbs SDXC that we always use with our Blackmagic’s Pocket Cinema Camera. To spice things up a bit more, we had to use a beta SDHC II 280mbs 32GB card provided by SanDisk. I hope that once the camera ships, it will take “standard” SD cards, but they won’t come cheap.

Shooting 4K @100mb/s 30p on a 64GB card will give you about 29 minutes of shooting time. So we are looking at three to four cards per shoot at $150 each. All things considered, I’d get Panasonic 64 GB microP2 cards. If you have a better suggestion please send me a tweet.
This extra budget consideration of $450-$600 doesn’t even include hard drives for storage and backups. Definitively a G-RAID 4TB Dual Thunderbolt drive is the way to go.

"The GH4 comes with two options for focusing magnification: Full frame and PIP which I find much more applicable for video. Even though PIP was not working while shooting video on our pre-production model, I’m sure it will be there when the camera ships.
• The peaking feature was working perfectly. A wonderful addition to our tips and tricks arsenal."

How does one interprete the above?

My guess is that it refers to the magnified focus assist feature — can either fill the screen or display in a window (PIP). Same as GH3 and GX7 actually, I think some older panny cameras also had.
