Hi guys,

I myself am considering getting a G1. I wanted your opinion about this - do you have a lot of noise for low light shots? Do you use a tripod often with low light shots?

I'm aware that in ideal conditions, the G1 excels in image quality.

Were any of you converts from a Nikon DSLR or Canon etc i.e. a full fledged DSLR to G1?

I converted from a Nikon DSLR. Actually I was looking at the 4/3 system initially as the lens are cheaper than Nikon lens (mainly f2.8 lenses and super wide angle lens such as 7-14mm lens). But as I was reluctant to buy an Olympus DSLR as its performance in terms of image quality, purple fringing effect and noise is not to my liking. The Panasonic L1 is good but its live view is not and the L10 is too big as well.

Lucky for me the G1 came along and it proved that the micro 4/3 system is cheaper and gives good image quality. Raw performance is good and ISO 400 is very usable. What's more micro 4/3 lens are cheaper than olympus 4/3 lens and quality is still good which is what I was looking for.

Greetings everyone,

Thought I should share some info regarding the Panasonic G1 photo dimensions and sizes. Hope this will be useful for everyone when deciding on minimum print size and SD card capacity:

Large: 4000 x 3000 pixels / 6MB to 3.5MB approx
Medium: 2816 x 2112 pixels / 4.5MB to 3MB approx
Small: 2048 x 1536 pixels / 2MB to 1.5MB appox

what brands of filter do you guys use on your G1 kit lens?
i'm using UV. any diff between UV and ND filter? does the brand/price makes any difference in terms of quality?

For me I'm using a CPL from B+W, its very useful for cutting glare from windows and smooth surfaces likes polished table tops. As for quality, there's not much difference between a cheap brand and an expensive brand for UV filters. But there is a HUGE difference if you're buying a CPL. I use GND filters a lot and I have the adapter, even so I'm still using my B+W cos the quality of the B+W is much, much better than the cheaper Tianya CPL. I just bought a Hoya CPL, but I haven't compared it against my B+W yet though.

hi,
any external flash available for G1? thanks.

thanks bro..i'll be looking for Oly FL36R :)

Any idea how much does it cost?
Heard that FL36 recharging time is slow..... Is there any improvement for FL36R?? :D

Just to share with everyone, for smaller flash units I recommend the DMW-FL220 which you can purchase from Cathay Photo for $239. It's a direct flash and it doesn't support Gary Fong Lightsphere or Stofen Omnibounce. You can however buy the smaller softboxes from Lumiquest, or do what I did and bought a cheap "soft diffuser cap" for $5 (its basically a tiny sock made from a gauze-like material) which you wrap over the flash like a sock. It looks silly but the results are surprisingly good.

Note for strobists, the DMW-FL220 does not have the manual controls that other external flash units have, so you have only limited control over the flash settings.

I want to ask, what are the preferred camera settings for fellow Panasonic G1 users for:
(1) landscape photography
(2) portrait photography

For me when shooting (2) I find that shooting at ISO 400 w/o flash produces sharper and more brightly lit photos, as compared to shooting at ISO 200 and w/ flash. This is for shooting in unlit corridors and indoors during daytime.

Does anyone want to share their preferred camera settings for different environments? Like evening time, night time, sports, etc?

Bro,

Can share some portrait taken by G1 + FL220? Would like to see how's the result.
Thanks ;)

Unfortunately I don't have any portrait photos to show, but once I do I'll be sure to post them here.

is there a good set of lens for G1 to take portrait? i test out the G1 with 14-45mm at Best Denki but don't seems to be able to get much bokeh.
