Dear fellow videomaker,

By chance found a fellow user selling the above setup? How does the DVX102 performs - usage, quality, low light?

So adding the harddisk, isnt it an alternate like using flash or SD memory, as such would like to ask more on its perfomance before committing.

I found a link on YouTube to review the DVX102 but it is in Thai... :( the Engllish review is DVX100 is it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKCz4INUVDU

Cheers

Be wary of DV external video drives. The connection is fragile. DVX102 is an excellent, industry workhorse that even shoots progressive in DV. But DV, bless its soul- is standard-res and rather prone to aliasing. Even MPEG2 standard definition seem to look better. If you like the DV workflow sans tape, consider the AC-130, it can shoot both AVCHD and DV on SD card.

Hi, just wanna know how is the performance of dvx102 with external hard drives. Cos doing AD highlights, need an alternative to those more modern camcorder using SD cards. Lessen the time to convert from tape to digital files.

On paper a good idea, but my experience with Sony's external drive solution was disastrous. Connections could give way, recorder may hang. And not so wieldy to have a heavy recorder on your camcorder + light+mic. If you want to safe time ingesting tapes or converting AVCHD, my suggestion is consider a edit-friendly codec like the Panasonic SD90 /SD900's iFrame. iFrame is intraframe and is very easy to edit instantly without conversion. If you are using FCP, download the new Panasonic AVCCAM plug-in that will allow instant editing of AVCAM footage without transcoding to prores. That opens you up to options like HMC41 and HMC152.(and many of Pany's /JVCs consumer 50i AVCHD line) Then there is the JVC HM100 which shoots on XDCAM EX format in a Quicktime wrapper that is natively supported in FCP.
Again, no transcoding needed. There is no need to retrograde to DV.

I see, after reading in your comments, I think it is really considerable to invest in HMC41 or HMC152... Thanks :)
