But this model doesn't look like a PnS at all more like mini-DSLR. Was hoping more like a slightly thicker LX3.

if there are any pancake type of WA and 35mm, then maybe it's pocketable in a coat..

I thought that was the idea, if looked like DSLR handles like DSLR might as well bring out DSLR, why use smaller version DSLR.

I was hoping it to use pancake lenses and can be easily holstered on belt so could carry it around easily to complement DSLR where not possible to bring DSLR.

It is still early days, maybe newer models will have these considerations or maybe Olympus will have these incorporated into their first release, who knows? Anyhow, it sure generated some excitement.

Personally, I'll wait till Olympus release their micro 4/3 lenses.

Hopefully the Olympus version would revert to the rangefinder styling, and if the comments on the AF speed holds true, then it's another step closer to replacing DSLR gear.

Can check the AF speed demo at dpreview site... looks impressive.:thumbsup:

Low light AF is another story tho.

sadly, it IS a dSLR which further enhance one of the pro of the the 4/3 format system which is lightweight and small size.

Technically it's not an SLR-concept camera, it's actually more similar to rangefinders (except that Panny went conservative, and IMHO missed out on product differentiation, on the styling!).

Hrmmm, we need one of these babies for a test run! ;p

hehe yea, tot of it again, so deleted off the comment but you posted just before i delete it. :embrass:

anyway, it looks to me like a high end prosumer with a dSLR-like sensor and lens changing system. with the EVF and big sensor it definitely looks an Sony R1 with seperate lenses.

LOL no worries. I think Panasonic is targeting the market segment that they're already strong in - the prosumer/PnS section - offering a sort of upgrade path to those unwilling to carry the bulk of the SLR systems.

I am hoping Olympus would target the DSLR owners as a 2nd-body lazy-day option by speccing their version above entry-level.

Look like it is the successor for their DMC-FZ50 series... :)

i think it still not quite possible for sensor of that size... the lens will still need to be huge enough to cover the image circle. at least its getting close to the size of fz28.
I think the 4/3 std's thing about telecentricity is that all light must fall 90' onto the sensor, aka rear element must be bigger than sensor.
but for this m43 the spec was relaxed (probably pushed by Panasonic ;p) so now the light is like other brands', where the rear element's picture "flares" into a cone unto the same sensor. Not sure by how much though, so pre-pro vignetting would be more present ever?

Hope Oly come up with one that works like the Epson Rangefinder... Played with it once and it is like so classical~~~

Yes, the Epson R-D1s is a beautifully made camera... a real work of art !

very disappointed....it is only slightly smaller than Olympus E-420.

E-420 : 130 x 91 x 53mm
DMC-G1 : 124 x 84 x 45mm
(from DP review)

There should be an in-cam software solution to reverse the vignetting.

Image ratio:
4:3
3:2
16:9
cool...but wondering if uses zuiko lens.
Does all the image ratio can be use? or stuck at 4:3 only. Like the DMC-L1, need to use it leica len in order to change the image ratio.

can use the adaptor... but still why bother getting a adaptor and mount it there when the overall size is going to be same as the 4/3 size and now with a PNS grip.

It's not so much about the extension tube but the control mechanism in the lenses. I could be wrong though :embrass:

It's the flangeback distance. :)

Even with the DMW-MA1APP adapter, currently only three 4/3 lens are able to autofocus in the G1.... :(
