so for own web domain, how much will the total cost probably be? and when creating own website, is it hard? do we have to know about html and all those stuffs? or they have things or layouts we can choose from? thanks all

Er. In the time it took you to type this paragraph, you could already have your answers. Did you even bother checking out the sites we receommended?

As for the web design, of course some HTML knowledge will help. Most sites offer a template where you can fill in text easily, but if you want to put in photo albums, etc, learn some HTML or else you'll have a very very cheap-looking site.

rack space is going to cost! not sure how much tho, but i do have a friend last time whos running a webhosting service.

And what kind of applications are u running?

It's for a future business, so the costs may be recovered. I needed apache, tomcat and at least JRE 1.5. Last I checked, most hosting solutions if they offered java, do not go up to 1.5.

Anyway, with my own rack, I can do whatever I want with it.

I shall list the instruction from start to end for you.

  1. Go find a registar (ie. Godaddy), Register and pay for it.
  2. Go find a host with cPanel, sign up.
  3. Get your host's nameserver
  4. Change the nameserver of your domain to the nameserver of your host.
  5. Wait 24-48 hours
  6. That's it.

Why not get a vps, something like slicehost.com where u can do what ever u want(almost).

I didn't know about such providers. That's great. thanks for the referral.

If I can get most of the things done with the VPS, that'll save me lots of $$$.

Its essentially a virtualised OS box so u can install and admin whatever u want that is legal.

Mmm soudns like you are trying to run a webhosting service.
why dont you try php instead of jsp.... java could be quite cpu intesnive

which website helps to check if an address is taken?

if you buy a hosting package usually you have to know FTP, MySQL and all the jargons of webmastering.
Unless you host them over at free providers such as GEOCITIES, Blogspot, that kinda stuff.
So you just purchase a domain for these sites.
For a starter, this is much better i believe.

actually you can scout for free hosting. many webmasters give free hosting, you just need to have the networking and resources to cite them.
Alot of US wemasters provide hosting for portfolios and fansites.
I have been hosted free under hollywood.com for many years now for my Kelly Clarkson site and now moved out to another free fansite host.

It is not virtually correct to say theres no such thing as free hosting. there are- but with limits. For one, most host donot allow advertisements.
For those who wants revenue thru ads, this will have to be a point for consideration.

I think he is trying to run jsp which has a little advantage/disadvantage over php due to its "stricter" rules as php is quite "loose" (in my opinion).
