overpaid for a filter?

wooooow...far worse than i experienced. Last December i bought a Tokina 11-16 at John 316 (my 3rd lense i bought there), and a Hoya UV that cost 100bucks!!. I thought they gave me the HD but its just the standard type, so the day after i went back and have them replaced it with kenko pro1d protector which cost around 60bucks i assume...and the 40bucks went straight to their pockets..

Complete disappointment to John 316, ruined my trust...Blacklisted already in my shoplist!!

Actually, the 77mm Kenko pro1D cost 50 at OP. I pretty much get all my lenses and filters at OP now, whenever possible.

There is nothing close to a Vitacon Multi-coated super slim filter that is worth owning, since Vitacon is junk. Ask for a store credit for the amount you paid for it, and get a Hoya HMC or Pro1D. Do your homework this time round.

But knowing the stores, you will not be able to get anywhere. They got you good, you think they will budge when you find out? Good luck trying though. And becareful also, some black-listed stores in SLS and Peninsular are known to beat up complaining customers as well. Not worth it for $60 ripoff. Maybe treat it as a lesson learnt and move on.

What's worst is, i was talked out from buying Hoya when i enquired!

Sigh

May i know how much is Hoya HMC and Pro1D? I suppose they're multi coated and light transmission is around 97%-99%?

Many thanks!

Just to share my own experience. I also heard john is reputable so I went there to get a filter. the guy who served me took very long before quoting a price without checking any guides etc. Did not get in the end because it's 40% more costly than Alan photo. Makes me wonder if it's a mix up or they intend to earn a profit from sales of filters. I agree with what some of you mentioned. We must be wary when getting accessories even more so because people tend to not know the market price as well.

Thank you!

Saw that much earlier.. but i think it was last updated in 2007! But thank you anyway. Appreciate it :D

Prices are still pretty close to today's pricing.

stumble upon is thread by chance.
Suggest u go back and demand an explaination of $100 more than normal price
its too kua zhang...

It does not matter if it is a rip-off or not. Yes, the shop is 'lawfully' right considering both parties has agreed. However, it simply shows that the shop owner is dishonest.

I have read a similar thread (like yours) few months back and he got the extra money charged back by pretending to get another similar item and was told a lower and correct price then he immediately whip up the receipt and he got back the extra cash eventually. Hope you will be successful.

Agreed, Brought the D300s with 18-200mm from them, wait too long, only payment in cash, no credit.
If you are someone 1st time their customer, they would not be friendly to you.
It's my own experience, from then on, all my gears are from CP.

hi all, recently bought a 77mm kenko pro1d protector(w) filter from John 3:16. paid $160 for it. wondering if i got ripped off???

wow. exp wor,.

I was similarly quoted a very high price for filters.:o:o I have since never return to the shop, its blacklisted liao!

77mm Hoya Pro1D Protector - $48
77mm Hoya Pro1D UV - $60
both quoted from TK

Recently bought a Hoya 77mm HMC UV(C) from ebay seller for $28, no idea what's the local price.

I would never pay more than $100 for a filter so yeah I think you paid too much :-P I paid $200++ too much for my camera but no point complaining about it now just don't go there!

That said, I think its better not to have anything on your lens except an excellent UV filter that doesn't compromise your lens' IQ, or Gradual ND filters for waterfalls if that's your kind of thing.

So CPL or ND with 10 stops are not allowed? :) They also would cross easily the $100 limit if you pick the high end brands.

I can buy my lens everywhere, but in the end I will still buy all my filters from OP. Never had an issue with them. The folks at OP will also openly tell me that their pricing is not that great for certain models/brands they stock and ask me to look elsewhere. I give them credit for that. They have me as a loyal customer. But no matter how loyal a customer you are, you still need to do your homework.

Never liked J316. Walked in once, waited a while, ask for something, out of stock and walked out. I felt they were too friendly. And from my years with dealing with salespeople, the friendlier they are, the more you have to be on the defense. But some people dig the friendly thing.

And for people who say it may be a mistake... Don't you find it funny that the "mistakes" are always in their (J316) favor if not challenged or found out? *shrug*. I feel business is business. IMO, just because the shop have a name that might mean something in a certain belief system, will not automatically mean the people running the business are totally fair and trustworthy. In the end, it is a business.

Looking at your Avatar, no wonder you don't like to shop at J316. haha

Friendliness in salesman is overrated. Honesty more important.

The baseline is business is still business, and J316 are not doing charity work. Dun rush into purchase n know what u r buying. I have been quoted inflated Canon and other lens accessories by them/Sam before :bsmilie: In the end u know if not in a hurry there are places selling at better prices elsewhere.

They're mass produced, we're paying too much for filters anyway :-) $15 also can. If China can do it cheaper then watch everybody give up and migrate there lah. You can really learn a lot from Australia, $25 retail cost and $75 full of "tall stories".

I have nothing against a name with a reference to any faith/belief system.
