Ovation External hardisk problem

Hi,
i just got an Ovation external hardisk using seagate 160gb hardisk.
My laptop has no problem to detect the external hardisk, but my desktop can't detect it.
Checked the device manager, shown unknown device under USB port.
Me using Wondows XP home edition with service pack 2.

anyone can help me?

Try using a shorter USB cable. The length of the USB cable plus the length of the cable within your PC may be too long. Sometimes, this results in your device not getting detected.

Also, try connecting to the USB port just beside your keyboard and mouse port. That way, no extra length of cable is introduced.

my hardisk has external power supply, so shouldn't be power supply problem.

zyle, which hdd you reformat?
the external hard disk or my pc?

1. If your laptop/notebook can detech your HDD then your HDD is safe, there is no need to reformat it. How long ago you insert it into your laptop? If it was recently, then it should not be the cable's fault. If it was a long time ago, then the cable might have rusted. The length of the USB cable have no direct impact on the transmission of data. The cable that came with my external HDD was too short hence I went to buy one thats 1m long.

2. Try if you can use any other USB devices on that particular USD slot. An average PC should have at least 2 - 4 USB slots for you to plug in. Swopping it usually will help.

3. Some versions of windows XP might be able to detect but unable to access it without specific drivers but that is rare.

If no 2 fails, then its time to service the board others it should work. Otherwise, it should work.

i can use the usb slot for my thumb drive, mouse, sync my Atom, except the hdd...

everytime i plu gin got the message as follwo:

Update your windows.... MS got some updates for home edition, and also there should be driver that comes with your HDD. If it doesn't, then very likely its your windows xp's issue.

i checked with my office IT guy, was told my Windows XP corrupted..

everytime i shut down my pc there will be a lots of error message prompt out, so i guess it is time to reformat my PC hdd...

damn, i need to transfer all my file to my laptop first, sian sia...

did u try with other USB ports? some ports are not able to work with some device..and all USB ports are not the same..

Update your windows.... MS got some updates for home edition, and also there should be driver that comes with your HDD. If it doesn't, then very likely its your windows xp's issue.

Solved this problem before for my friend's PC, this is cause usually when your Main Board Drivers corrupted. Meaning you may need to reinstall your Motherboard Drivers. Especially when your board have many I/O interface: firewire; usb 1.0, usb 2.0, eSata and etc. Here is a few steps you can try. *Assuming you do not have any problems with power supply.
1) Log in to your BIOS, set everything to default settings and boot, try if your system can detect the USB HDD or not, if same old problems occurs, do the following:
2) Download BIOS from your motherboard manufacturer and install them.
3) Download latest drivers from your motherboard manufacturer and install them.

This problem usually happens to most Taiwan Mainboard, too many features too many addresses, or your HDD is too big, the default drivers or bios does not expects such sizes from the USB device. Hope it helps

i just bought an Ovation external hard disk, it is 320 GB, 2.5 usb hard drive. my problem is the disk that comes with it as installer contained so many installers but it seems nothing from it works. i browsed the internet for the driver but i cant find it. can anyone help me download the driver for my ovation usb external hard disk, the model is 2526, i would appreciate any help i can get. btw, i am using an old pc, a pentium III with windows 98 se as the OS but it is indicated in the package that it is supported by windows 98.

External USB hard disks should have no driver requirements. If you're still having problems, buy a good, high-quality USB cable. Most shops slap in a USB cable that is unable to supply enough power to the HDD usb port for drive recognition to take place.

thanks for the reply but i think since i am using a windows 98 se my problem really is the driver installer, i would appreciate if anyone can provide me the installer or the website where i can get the installer.
