Hi all,
Can anyone advise if it is advisable to get D90 from US or overseas.
The price there are much more attractive after the tax rebate.
But my only concern is the warranty coverage, not sure if it is worldwide coverage or?
Anyone has bought D90 from overseas or can advise on the warranty coverage.
Thanks

Nikon body only local warranty.

yes nikon bodies are only localised warranty.
just go get one from a local store and have a peace of mind rather than saving some money for a lot of hassle when something happens.

If you are bringing the camera body back to Singapore you will incur state tax in the US as you are not a US resident.

Warranty will not be covered by NSC in Singapore, only effective in the US. If you purchase from the big chains like Adorama or B&H they may have extended warranty for you of up to 4 more years if I recall correctly, but you have to cover shipping to and fro for them to act on the warranty.

It may be better to get a set from the location you plan to use the camera in, unless the savings offset the value of the warranty to you.

You don't pay extra even if you are not a US resident. You might have misunderstood how the US state tax works. In most US states, they have state tax on goods purchase (% varies from state to state) - similar to our GST. E.g. if you go physically to a New York City store to buy the camera, you will have to pay the 8.375% state tax. However, if you are buying your camera online from a NYC store such as B&H or Adorama, AND you are staying in a city that is outside of New York State (e.g. Los Angeles or Singapore), then the NY state tax does not applies to you. This is for everyone including US citizens and non-citizens.

One more thing to note: If you get camera from the reputable stores such as B&H or Adorama, when something happened to you camera, the store might elect to ask you to send the camera to your local service center and they will pay for the repair. Of course, they might be asking you to send the camera back and you will have to bear one way transportation cost. But, like other said, you get 5 years from the US stores verses the 1 year here in Singapore. So, there are pros and cons you have to take into account. Decision is easy when you have all the facts.

Yeah I was assuming TS was going to the States physically as he mentioned the tax rebate and did not want him to go there expecting to get the camera with that discount. Good job covering all the eventualities though. :p

The NYC stores are very reputable and have great customer service, no issues getting stuff from them.

I heard some guys did get slapped with GST when the goods come to Singapore customs. Not sure how often that happens, but as long as your item does not look too expensive it usually passes.

I think the US rebate is what they called instant rebates which get deducted from the selling price directly. No need to send in coupons and provide US address for them to send back the check. so the overseas orders also benefit from the rebates.

However, I believe the instant rebates will end on Saturday (still got about 10 hours since they are 13 hours behind SG at the time of writing this).

Nikon specifically says in the box 1 year worldwide and 4 years USA.
So to be on the absolute safe side I'd always recommend an International Warranty if you are outside the US; besides which, some warranties can give you 3, 5 or 7 years - much beyond the one-year manufacturer warranty.

Apologies - I was answering 2 postings at the same time & got muddled; the Nikon international warranty applies only to the LENSES, not camera bodies - and I believe that is only lenses sold individually and not in the kit.

So, an International warranty is more than desireable if you are purchasing from outside the US.

@helen, do you have international warranty for panasonic cameras?

@helen, the link just brings me to the home page, can you describe instead how you got to that page? i.e. did you search it in the search box?

i tried searching for "international warranty" but it came up for only the mark 3 year laptop warranty.
