[ Opinion and Advice ] - Lenses for E-PL1

Yeah read up on the sigma one too. Love the constant f2.8 but sigma lenses are said to give yellowish warmer tints right?

Supposedly, never seen it for myself personally, but can be corrected by WB and in post processing

imo, yes. there is a very slight yellowish tint to your pictures, quite unnoticeable actually. but not as bad as what others make it out to be.

easily correctable (as mentioned also by spidey) if it bothers you. perhaps you can give it a try, but looking for sigma lenses for 4/3 in local shops is pretty hard.

thanks for the advice guys! also, i believe the sigma will be cheaper than oly's zuiko. just wondering if the constant f2.8 is worth it. or if the zuiko is even better than sigma even tho its not constant f2.8..

f2.8 is not everything. IMHO the ZD 14-54 is better. Esp in SG if service is considered.

that is also true. Sigma 18-50 is a little slow at focusing (understandable, being dubbed a macro lens), just slightly better than ZD 14-45 i had, both using E520 body (PDAF), but it is mechanical MF so MF is imho, more tactile, unlike motor assisted focusing system in majority of ZD lenses. AF does hunt in low light/contrast occasionally which prompted me to upgrade to ZD 12-60.

strongly suggest you try your hands on both, then make your decision. i think the prices for both are quite similar. Have not personally tried the ZD 14-54, but it has a longer focal length range and possibily faster focus. Plus with your E-P1 body, you'd probably be better off with the ZD 14-54 Mk II which supports CDAF.

yes, F2.8 isn't everything, if you have to live with slow focusing speeds if the sigma isn't working fast with CDAF of PENs. (do correct me if i'm wrong)

Also, what's your reason looking for a standard lens specifically with F2.8? lowlight shooting? imho, for lowlight shooting, you'll be much better off with an external flash (FL36/FL50).

tbh, personally i feel in lowlight, F2.8 helps, but it's really still not optically very fast. that's why i got an ext. flash.

yeah i have an FL-36.. i'm not particularly certain how to use the external flash. there have been instances when it fails to fire off. i need to read up more on that.

oh so the ZD 14-54 Mk II supports CDAF but not 12-60? how do u tell if a lens supports CDAF? =p

CDAF in olympus lingo is known as Imager AF. done some search work for you (but could be outdated since it's updated in 2008):

http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/compati/di004043e.cfm

btw, a search on "Zuiko Digital CDAF support" on google yields this:

http://mychiaroscuro.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1906

afaik, there aren't physical markings on these lenses itself to distinguish themselves as Hi-Speed Imager AF capable. So you'll have to follow the compatibility chart as above or do some homework before commiting. and it's confirmed that the sigma has no hi-speed imager support.

I'm using their esystem, so i'm not really sure about CDAF on PENs. But hope that helps.

I was using that 18-50/2.8 on my E-PL1. Yellow tint..not really. I use VIVID setting hence it may not really show.

The yellow tint did show in the grass in the background. It gives a muddy green look

The AF works fine, it's not as fast at the 14-42, there is a slight zit zit when it focus. It will high speed to almost the correct point, then stops and slowly creep to the accurate point. It will not constant AF in video mode.

sigma? I used to love sigma lenses on my ex-nikon. It gives a counteracting effect to the heavy contrast that "N" has. How is the performance for the night? And can the WB be compensated for the slight yellowish tint?

Not really tried night shots with it yet. Let you know when I do.

your 35mm lens will look narrower.

Hi I have old Nikon FA with a few lens, and which adaptor could use back on the EPL1? Thanks in advance....

thks, did some reading on this also

another thing I noticed that is missing from E-PL1 that I really like on my previous LX3 is the composition guidelines, i went thru the manual, could not find it so i guess no such feature

Its there... just press the [info] button a few times. one of the view has got the grid.

Anyway, since this thread is "ask about lenses for E-PL1", I shall share a good news with everyone. I just went with a friend to harvey norman @ funan to buy his M ZD 9-18mm F4-5.6 (for m4/3). And guess what? its only $820! damn....i paid a lot more for this. But anyway those looking for this lens do take note. ;)

did i miss out something, when i press info, first time i will get the histogram, then press the second time, all the info gone, then press the third time back to all the info in, did not manage to get the guide lines :(
