One best lens for everyday photography?

Thanks for info. But not sure if this is a fair comparison, one on DX at 35mm FF equiv & the other on FX at 24mm FF, & camera brand/model different too. Should compare the 24mm in same brand DX camera.

Well I guess it does not have to be a totally 100% fair comparison. Coz (1) I mentioned earlier, just for reference & comparison, Tamron 17-50 @ wide end is more or less better than the other and (2) its a 3rd party zoom vs Nikkor prime, and (3) one is a DX and the other is a FX lens. D3X or not, the diff is huge actually. Real world apps - depends on what you are after and what you have (DX/FX) anyway. LOL! But seriously, the difference in that kind of scenario for the mid-frame and corner is somewhat visible at 24" monitor res/size, center not so much. I own the stuff and more (quite a number of other lenses), and I shoot + fast PP quite a number of photos so I do see them on-screen quite a lot over these years, for commercial reasons albeit not what you'd call high-end nor very talented. :bsmilie:

Ok, just get the Nikkor zoom then, 24-85. Both D3X.

Thank you for your pointers. I was about to look further into this lens. Just got my 85mm f1.8 so looking for a companion wide angle prime to cover both end. If a zoom is better for the DX at wide, then will get a zoom instead because I am flexible at this end though not at the tele end where a faster lens/thinner DOF is preferred. These are FX primes but will be used on DX as not decided on upgrade yet. :)

P.S. Think we were acquainted before at Echoloft where we discussed technicalities on hi-fi/computers & you were talked about cameras/weddings. Small world ;)

Good choice, the 85/1.8 is very sharp even by primes standard wide open, on DX bodies. Good if you do not need the specialised needs of a 70-200 and its fast focussing + main point of being small + light. Just have to be careful about high CA with the extremely high contrast edges. (ie if can avoid then avoid).

Hey yeah now that you've said it your nick does ring a bell. :)

I would pick 24-70mm f2.8

hi all. sorry im new to dslr photography but I observe that Nikon users use lots of Nikon lenses while Canon users tend to venture into third party lens such as Sigma, Tamron etc. Is there a reason for this? Are Nikon lenses cheaper/better? This is something I have to consider as I'm a student and will be funding myself when I get lenses, hence everything will be on budget and I already got poisoned by 24mm f1.4!

I think there's no indication on whether Nikon or Canon users r venturing more into 3rd party lenses. Most go for them because they r cheaper (in comparison with the parent brand of the same or similar types). I tend to think Canon users will stick with Canon lenses more because Canon lenses are generally more affordable than Nikkor's.

For me personally, I stick with Nikkor for it's fast and quieter focusing, and more importantly smooth integration and compatibility with the body. But they are and can be quite expensive to keep up with.

I see. Because comparing the Canon and Nikon thread, there seems to be more talk about third party lenses in the canon sub-forum and under personal classifieds, most of the third party lenses are those with canon mount.

Canon lenses are generally much more cheaper than Nikon, but I don't know why Canon users don't want to use Canon lenses like what you said. For me, I prefer Nikon G prime lenses because of its sharpness and contrasty.

I do not want to poison you with the pictures but it's really a great lens for everyday even for low light situations :D

xintothezonez, you've got to check out the latest pix over at the FM 24 f1.4 wide open thread. But as seen and said, it is not an easy FL to use, but you cannot blame the tool for not giving you nice pix even for people photography anyway.

yeah.. seen it and i do totally agree with you.
they have produced beautiful pictures taking landscapes, portraits and even abstracts/still life.

Those guys are shooting the 24mm at 24mm. The problem with the thinking here, is that they are shooting that at 35-50mm thereabouts (in which that range is already covered by the 35 & 50 glass). This is actually a very fundamental point, nothing more to it. Hope that makes sense. :)

i must say the 24 1.4 is a brilliant lens. i rented it for a day and pushed it to its max. shooting wide open in daylight. razor sharp wide open and the bokeh is just sweet. a completely different feel to my photos.

one issue i had though is that the afs is kinda slow la. the 35 f2 and 50 afd lock faster.

The line up of new Nikon prime lenses 24, 35 and 85mm f1.4G are all sharp and contrasty at wide open f1.4, which can give the cinematic feel to the pictures.

My opinion is that the 50mm/f1.4 is the 'perfect' everyday lens (and one that is often neglected by many photographers)
1) It's relatively lightweight yet has f1.4 speed.
2) Its perspective is closest to that of our natural human field of vision (most natural).
3) It's really good value for money (even cheaper if you buy the f1.8 version).

I have it on my D700 all the time. Maybe you would choose a 35mm if you're using a DX body.

Then I have a 14-24/2.8 for the short/wide end. And the 70-200/f.2.8 for the long/tele end. In between, I just use my legs to do the zooming (a few steps forwards of a few steps backwards). Often, I just mount the 50mm/f1.4 on my D700 and shoot the whole day with this combo. You'd be surprised you might learn more about how to be creative with this lens.

I also have the 24-70/2.8, and I use this in place of the fixed 50mm when framing is very important and I don't have the option to step back or step forward, e.g when shooting weddings and events.

Happy shooting.
