On lowballers and highballers...

Sometimes I read post of personals selling stuffs and sometimes they like to post "No Lowballers" or like "Lowballers stay away".......I look at the prices and they are so high. I start thinking, contrary to the statement - many sellers try to highball their way thru....kind of like the pot calling the cattle black. Of course I can't speak for other people, just my perception. It's funny......like people will post something Nikon 24-70mm for $2500 (without warranty) when new can be gotten for $2700 and I would be thinking why would someone want to save $200 and not have warranty! Point is, just as some potential buyers lowball (I must confess I tried before), many sellers try to highball they way, guilty as all.

I normally do a CS pricing survey and check out what prices other sellers are selling the thing for, taking into consideration warranty status and condition rating (i.e. check out prices of those similar to my thing). Then I will ask for a price in the middle.

True, some sellers do highball. Well, noone is forcing you to buy from that seller. It is up to the buyer to do his own pricing survey too, which I also do when buying things. If you find that someone is pricing his item too high, well, just walk away and look for another one. No point to bargain and lowball.

Maybe can think of these sellers like some shops in Sim Lim Square... some are priced much higher than others. You, as the buyer, have to do your own research and look for the good buys. But if you walk into the shop and ask to push down the price by a large margin, of course the seller would not be happy. Because if you don't like the price, you can just go away. But to approach and lowball is confrontational and displeasing.

I don't get the issue here.
You have a brain, you have a PC. You can do some homework on what the prices are like, and decide if the price suits. Simply ignore the high prices.

As for lowballs, just ignore them or post their silly prices.

If I know that nobody else, or very few people are selling what I am selling, of course I will try to sell at high price, anywhere between 70% to 110% of what I originally paid. Especially so if I am not in a hurry to sell. For certain brands, this is more feasable than others.

It's all about supply and demand. "Lowballers stay away" is a reasonable statement to make because there are the cheapskates who think they can get the 24-70 for $1000. If you're interested, but think the price is too high, make a reasonable offer. Sometimes prices are jacked up so high because the seller wants to factor in the bargaining margin. S'poreans, no matter how good the deal, die-die will still want to ask for discount.

Like some people say: If you think buying brand new is more worth it, then what's stopping you?

(btw, the plural of "stuff" is still called "stuff". No such thing as "stuffs". And it's "pot calling kettle black".)

$1000 for 24-70mm ? not new lah, i remember someone asked $1200 for 70-200 f2.8G in CS :bsmilie: think better ask them go fly kite, so much cheaper than photography..

If the price is too high, he won't get buyers. Maybe it's just me but I hate incoming calls and SMS especially when they are useless.

So when I sell things, I put something like "please do not bid below XXX, let's respect each other's time". I find "lowballers stay away" a bit rude and condescending.

Hey I agree with your point of view.
It is actually quite redundant to say no lowballers as each person perceives the price relative to his own set of factors. By saying no lowballers it would mean that the seller is intent on selling at his price.
Generally as rule of thumb at least 10% down from new price for near brand new items and 20% for lightly used and about 30-40% for used items which are still in very good working and comestic condition.
For buyers you can decide who to call. I generally ignore those asking less than 10% down from new price as I believe you might as well get it new. U take the risk that the seller is trying to push off a "lemon". Might as well get the items new.
