going to kee siow in china liow...making a trip to hk for a break tomorrow.

where is the best place to pick up the e-m1/12-40 and how much is it going for?

thanks!

hey guys,

I wanna check our the vivocity fireworks tonight with my godson & hope to take some good photos with my em1. Hoping you guys can share your knowledge on the settings & setup I should/can use .

For still shots of the fireworks alone, I'll probably try the SCN > Fireworks mode but don't have a proper tripod yet (have a flimsy 1 which I don't think will adequately support the em1). So would some alternate mode settings (M, A, S?) help me shoot the fireworks better than SCN > Fireworks if I have to shoot handheld?

what would be the techniques required to take a crisp shot of my godson with the fireworks in the background? isit even possible to do so with just the em1 & kit lens?

yes total noob here :) Oh & if anyone is going tonight, please drop me a PM.

this should start you out at a reasonable place without fiddling with black cards:

- use the tripod anyway, mount camera horizontally (not vertical)
- M mode, ISO 100 (LOW)
- start with f/8, 10s
- on the 12-40 lens, pull the focus ring towards you to engage Manual Focus
- set focus distance on the lens right in the middle between the 1m and infininty marks (should be just after the orange '5')
- set lens to 12mm (widest)
- mount flash, turn it on
- set White Balance to Sunny (or Flash)
- godson should stand in the dark and against night sky in-frame, around 2-3m away from the camera

shoot after you see/hear the firework rocket being launched. the flash will light up your godson and 10s should be enough to catch the fireworks trail.

if the fireworks turn out too bright (white and very little color), increase the aperture F number appropriately (9, 10 or 11).

if the capture ends too soon before getting a good bloom, make the shutter speed longer (12s, 15s) or shorter if appropriate.

if my skinny tripod holds, my godson can participate - especially with that black card trick. i'm not gonna get a remote shutter as yet - trying not to be that guy who waits to get all the perfect accessories before taking pictures = which i'm prone to be lol.

use the OIShare app from phone to do remote control over Wifi?

That's a good point! No more remote release cable. Does em1 do live bulb, I remember the ois app is more open on em1 than on Ep5(iauto only)

seems the new update would be helpful for the fireworks :)

varf : thanks for the easy 2 follow instructions. good idea to use the app :)

agree that OIS app with EP5 is still kinda limited. I honestly use it mostly to transf photos for quick online sharing.

Its confirmed that the OIS app has more functions with EM-1?

i can still remember my wife remarked: 'huh? then if u wana re-compose on another area u still need to shift the camera? thought can just shift the handphone to do so." i was really speechless :what:

Available already.
Updated yet?
AF really super fast after updating... especially low light AF. ;)

i've check with SLRR , they dont have it.

That's quite strange. I bought a remote cable release from them with detachable cable. They even told me can just buy the cable itself as they have it separate.

maybe they don't like me

hey guys so i went to vivo for the fireworks. I'll try to post some pics when I find out how to share full sized images. seems i have to wait 30 days to share a link?

So setup with my (now confirmed flimsy) tripod that slants to 1 side becos E-m1 is heavier on the right. Firmware 1.1!, iso low, f9, M mode with bulb time, forgot to set focus length, forgot to use RAW, used olympus app as remote shutter (you can press & hold app shutter). Managed to take 11 photos in total, last 1 being handheld trying to add stylo effect by refocusing but actually i simply just panned down instead of refocused lol. tried exposures between 2 - 16 sec. Its cool to be able to watch the fireworks while you take photos instead of being glued to the evf or screen.

results were pretty ok, but I hope u can judge for me when i figure out how to share the photos. not sure why some shots had more movement than others. It's hard to time the shutter so that u get the maximum bloom yet not use too long an exposure. Oly app was fun to use! Noticed that in bulb time, u can't take a new shot while the mem card is being written to unlike burst shooting (which takes like same time as the exposure with scan disk ultra 30mb/s). Using app to shoot increased the time taken to shoot the next shot (various delays including waiting for picture to show) vs direct from camera shutter where once writing is done, I can immediately take the next bulb shot even though screen is black (it's black while card is being written to).

Got my firmware update at Oly service centre. Donald was really helpful and even tried to answer my questions on other aspects of the camera (including ghosting). He was nv dismissive about my concerns. Printed out for me the various changes from this new firmware. Think it took them no more than 10 mins to update. Olympus should really loan their tech staff the em-1 for a considerable period of time so that they can better answer customer enquiries. Loving the after-sales.

It can access all photos from the camera. I like adding the OMD logo to photos. Pic quality transferred to app is lower (from 8mb to 2.6mb)
