OMG! Look at the EM-1 aka the now official E-M1 Thread

is it ugly?

Heard the lens's supply is low. Same with E-M1 with lit lens.

Wondering whether the screen protector of EM5 can fit onto EM1 screen?

hey guys,

I wanna check our the vivocity fireworks tonight with my godson & hope to take some good photos with my em1. Hoping you guys can share your knowledge on the settings & setup I should/can use .

For still shots of the fireworks alone, I'll probably try the SCN > Fireworks mode but don't have a proper tripod yet (have a flimsy 1 which I don't think will adequately support the em1). So would some alternate mode settings (M, A, S?) help me shoot the fireworks better than SCN > Fireworks if I have to shoot handheld?

what would be the techniques required to take a crisp shot of my godson with the fireworks in the background? isit even possible to do so with just the em1 & kit lens?

yes total noob here :) Oh & if anyone is going tonight, please drop me a PM.

The EM1 and 12-40 is more than sufficient ah. I have done it with the older EP3 and kit lens.

I'd normally shoot in manual, using low ISO (u have ISO100) , aperture around f8 upwards and use the live bulb function with a longer exposure. Just a few seconds is needed to capture the full 'burst'. This is just a guide as u probably will need to adjust at the field.

The settings will definitely vary according to how u r going to compose your photo.

I'll definitely recommended a tripod or if not, find a stable place to set up the camera and use a remote release (which if not , use the anti shock function to minimize shake). Handheld can be done if not doing longer exposures but really it's really really better to stabilize it somewhere.

Enjoy :) I didn't even know tonight Vivo got
Fireworks , need to get out more haha

Hello,

A quick google will find the following useful thread.

http://petapixel.com/2009/07/03/10-tips-for-shooting-firework-displays/

But as mentioned, with your godson as foreground and fireworks with background will be slightly more tricky. U probably need some way to brighten his face e.g. under street lamp, LED torch from handphone or use Slow Synchro (flash symbol with "SLOW"), with this you will need to use it in P/A/S/M mode. If it's too complicated try A mode for a start.

There's also another technique called black card which you can use a black opaque card to cover the firework portion on your lens when there's no fireworks, sounds daunting? check out this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC4eYCCGSgc
but do try it after u had made a couple of shots using usual method.

You can also try using LIVEBULB (live preview feature as you shooting progress, a preview will be shown) set the preview to 1/2s, set ISO to 200 and shoot off and stop when u deem it's ok. You will need to set it to Manual and turn all the way to LIVEBULB (set it to be on in the first place, i think default is off. LIVEBULB+Blackcard technique can be fun and useful.

One thing though if you shoot much long exposure you would want to have long exposure noise reduction turned auto, but that also doubles your shooting time. e.g. if you shoot 10s, it take another 10s to process the shot, this is to reduce "hot pixels".

Have fun, wish I can be there. Welcome to m43 forum

Cheers

thanks for the replies. wondering why "bulb" and not "time" as wouldn't holding the shutter down induce more likelihood of camera shake?

if my skinny tripod holds, my godson can participate - especially with that black card trick. i'm not gonna get a remote shutter as yet - trying not to be that guy who waits to get all the perfect accessories before taking pictures = which i'm prone to be lol.

The fireworks display is part of vivo's anniversary celebration routine, chanced onto the ad just yesterday. This year's is by some japanese firm/fella. 7 mins! love firework displays :)

Any idea about how to remove WIFI logo on screen? Is it "permanently" there?
Just got em1 body today at good price from BnS.

It's personal , but for fireworks which is short I'd prefer live bulb. Don't need to hold that long anyway right ;)

I'm not good with live time unless with a remote ; I tend to introduce more shake using live time as compared to live bulb with having to press the shutter button again.

Taking a portrait with fireworks in the background isn't easy and a challenge to me , Jia u with it!
