OM-D for video?

Tried the OM-D at camera shop and was very impressed with the 5axis stabilization. But I read on the net that this cam has a few issues for video use. It has 24p and no 25p so using it in PAL region like Singapore will be at risk of flickering in artificial lighting. It has no audio-in jack. And apparently the compression can be rather nasty.
Just wanna check with those who use it for production how you overcome these issues. Any other inputs from real world uses are very much valued as well.

Thanks! : )

check out the guy who filmed during reservist. he used omd. recent thread.

The night interior shots 1:16-1:38 exhibits no noticeable flicker. But we have to ask Egnr about the type of lighting used and any post production correction. I think it OMD is a good addition to your kit bag. But obviously cannot be the only camera.

Hi Beachbum,
The video below was made solely with the OMD handheld. I was part of the execise troop so i couldnt bring much (3D2N holiday camp) due to the weather. I would say it makes great videos for personal use.

1. The CODEC is lacking compared to Canon, breaks when there are a lot of details and fast movement (eg: shooting the ground in a flying aircraft). You will get round it once you get experienced. Can't colour grade it too much as well due to the limited details in there but you can still get some nice looks within the NLE grading.
2. The 24P is an irritating thing but it is useable, does get flickering at times and we cant overcome as there is no shutter angle selection. I do not have issues with indoor lighting thou, main problem is outdoor street lamps especially. I can also pump higher shutter speeds for outdoor shoots (the video below did not use any ND filter).
3. The same size (I do not use a grip) works well for me. I can simulate panning/dolly shots by hand with the solid in built 5axis stabilizer. I can even simulate steadicam shots a little.
4. I can do timelapses with an intervalometer. Awesome! No more heavy DSLR for my biz overseas trips now.

Hope this helps.

Hi Engr,

Thank you for the very informative reply. I will certainly give the Om-D a try out. As I am typing this, Olympus has just introduced a new pen5 with 5 axis stabilization as well. But alas!! It still only has 30p!!??? What are they thinking?

I assume for sound, you will be using an external recorder and using the onboard sound as scratch track?

How do you do the lighting effect from 1:09 to 1:12 ? Thanks

Hi Beachbum,
I used the onboard sound. Wasnt planning on dialogue so that was fine for me. If i had to do an interview i would take my Zoom H1 along, pair it with a Rode lavalier if i wanted it real good but in that combat situation the H1 would do fine for me.
