Olympus XZ-1 with FAST f1.8 lens

Any reason why can't they make a similar f1.8 lens (fantastic walkabout range) found in the XZ-1 in M4/3 version? It will probably be smaller, lighter and better than the Pany 14-140 which is already very good but find it too heavy.

A "similar" lens would still be significantly larger than the XZ-1 lens (due to the larger sensor in M4/3). It would definitely be better (at F1.8-2.5), but may or may not be smaller and lighter, as it has to reach F1.8-2.5 compared to the F4-5.6 the 14-150mm.

They can build it, but to be somewhat cynical, they likely won't as:
1. Olympus would worry that a 28-11x equivalent F1.8-2.5 on M4/3 would cannibalize the sales of the higher-priced/higher-margin DSLR body and lens.
2. Or, in order to prevent (1), a M4/3 28-11x F1.8-2.5 would be pegged at some ridiculously high price.

Unlikely until a competitor or 3rd party manufacturer releases a similar lens anyway... ;-)

The XZ-1 lens is only a 4x zoom (28-112mm) and the lens I've mentioned is the Panasonic 14-140mm which comes with the GH-1 and not the Olympus 14-150mm which is much lighter. Shouldn't a 4X zoom be much lighter and smaller than a 10x zoom?

Be it Panasonic or Olympus, comparisons still has to be apple to apple. If purely reducing zoom range, yes, a 4X zoom *should* be lighter and smaller than a 10x zoom.

As I've mentioned in my previous post, one factor has been reduced (zoom range), but two other factors (sensor size and light sensitivity) increased.

As an analogy (not proof), many 28-70 or 28-80mm F2.8 lenses are just as big or bigger than a 28-200mm ~F3.5-5.6 from the same manufacturer. Even before considering increasing the sensor size.

Why is why I said "may or may not be smaller and lighter".

ps. This is going off topic. Perhaps you may want to start a new thread "Size and weight of a hypothetical M4/3 Olympus 28-105 F1.8" instead... :D

I just bought XZ-1 at Funan Challenger. Went for a couple of night shots and found out that there is a vertical purple line across the LCD screen whenever the camera is pointed at a street lamp at F1.8 and F2.0. Is this normal?

hopefully, all is well.

Thanks in advance.

It's normally more visible in video than in photos.

whats the cause of this purple line?

probably some form of chromatic aberrations. dats wat I thk...

it's the nature of ccd sensors to have those lines when pointed to bright light sources.

Just got my 2nd XZ-1 to replace my lost XZ-1:(...Purchase at Mini Challenger Funan 2nd floor at $650. Comes with 8g Memory, Screen protector, mini tripod, cleaning kit. No additional battery cos no stock. Otherwise it will be $670 instead.

wow, the price is super nice.. time to drop my S95 for one...

How come nobody start a thread on pics taken by XZ-1 ah? :P

Is that so? Strange... I bought mine for $38 only. Original... not third party.

Hi,

May I know where to purchase original XZ-1 battery at $38?
You can PM me too. Thanks.

although my GF is using olympus XZ1 white, I feel like buying a black one already... love this camera.

Just got my white XZ-1 from Mini Challenger at Funan about 2 hours ago. $650 with 8GB card, mini tripod, free screen protector and cleaning kit. No spare battery . . .

Now charging the battery. Seems a bit troublesome to charge the battery with the camera attached.

There are 3rd party charger available which can charge this battery as well as a few other brands' batteries in the same charger. You can get one from the same place which sells the $38 original XZ1 battery. ;)

Thank you so much for telling me where to get the battery. I even got an external charger (3rd Party = Divipower) at $38. I have not visited that shop in years . . .

The Oly sg web is selling the original battery at $61 and the shop is selling at$38? Possible???
