Contrast Detection AF is used in P&S. This enables you to focus normally by half-pressing the shutter to focus. This results in you not needing to have the mirror go up, focus, and go down again. :) But it still won't be faster than how the E-330/A-350 LV works.

In other words, the LV AF speed on the 420 should be comparable to P&S, and that in the E330/A350, they are in a higher league altogether?

Then why did they employ it? Is there an advantage to contrast detection AF compared to other types of AF?

If you take a look at this image for reference:

When the mirror is up for live view you can see that the red path can't reach the focus sensor, and instead it continues straight to the imaging sensor...so another form of focusing has to be used as the light can't reach the phase detection focus sensor.

Ahhh...I see. So I suppose contrast detection is the only feasible way to do it.

I am very close to putting my money on the E-420 + 25mm lens (if I can find one in Hong Kong) which will be my second camera.... then I noticed that the directional pad (arrow keys) on the E-420 do not have a dual function like the E-520 ie. one touch access to change WB, AF, Metering and ISO.

Question to E-420 (and E-410) users who also own the E-510 : Do you find it an inconvenience that you have to always go back to the 'main screen' to change settings instead of one-touch access like the E-510?

Well, the answers will probably not change my decision to buy the camera but I just want to know how you guys feel about it... :embrass:

yes and no. it just takes a little getting used to. :)
