Hi,

First post here and first DSLR is E510...saw all the pictures here and was amazed by how E510 can capture such beautiful shots(with rich colours). When I look at my own pictures, it is mostly dull(or lack vibrancy). Not to offend anyone, but was there any PP done on these shots? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the Four-Thirds (4/3) sub-forum in CS!

congrats on being a e510 owner, we are a pretty diverse mix of photography professionals and hobbyists here but what we have in common here to to share our techniques, tips and tricks be it for 4/3 system or general photography skills.

i assume that you have basic understanding of your camera so do spend some time to read the manual. most of the shots here are either off camera jpegs or RAW processed. if you find your camera jpegs colours too neutral, you should make some adjustments to your colour settings (e.g. vivid mode).

taking photos is only the 1st step in photography, from there, there is post processing, image enhancement (if you like to) and printing. these are the many aspects of photography, since film days.

do a search and you'll find an abundance of information on getting the best from your photos, if you would like to read something specifically on the e510, i recommend this:
http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/oly-e/e500-sett.html its a long read, but it explains every setting available in your e510.

if you have any specific questions, do a search in CS and you will probably find your answer. if not, you can always ask here and we'll help if we can.

there is also a 4/3 users gathering coming up on 2 Oct at Boat Quay TCC, do join us if you are free! enjoy shooting!

Thanks for the encouragement. Will look forward to be there if I can complete counting my beans that day...month end cycle

Having lots of fun with Oly and learning/reading and shooting daily. But must remember to use my brain when looking thru the viewfinder and not shoot blindly.

I am really interested in the name of the production these shots are from. I love musical and dramatic theatre, and this looks like an exciting show.

I would love to know the circumstances of these shots. I can't imagine taking out my camera and starting shooting in the middle of a performance... So was this shot as an assignment? Was it during a rehearsal or an actual performance? If it was a rehearsal, was the light changed (boosted in some way) to accomodate the photographer? I hate to pry, but I would love to take shots like these of performance art or theatre.

You are right, this was an assignment.

Circumstances of the shot? Pretty straight forward. Lighting changes from time to time and you have to watch one show before the shoot to understand how the lighting designer is going to work. So mainly observe in one show and make notes. Everything was shot manually, and this time it was tough, I had only 80% success rates in the pictures. Got caught a couple of times with fast lighting change and the image dimmed out.

Spot metering with a light meter all the way. And double checked once in a while with spot metering on my E-1. This is one of those times when the 35-100mm come in handy because of the fast f2.0 aperture and the sharpness you can see for yourself. Almost every shot was taken wide open because of the lighting condition. The face is where you spot meter, and you have to ensure that you meter on the area where the natural skin tone is, not the eye or make up where it is much darker. And you can get some nice theatrical shots like these :

The E-1 shines as a pro camera because of its super quiet shutter, so no one was bothered as I was clicking away. Focusing was manual for more than half the shots and it was easier than I thought. All handheld (yes brothers, I am gaining muscles from handholding this lens now), no monopod was used.

And if anyone complained about the lowlight, how about this shot taken in almost complete darkness and the subject was lit by the screen of her Nintendo DS?

Hope this sharing is helpful for you. Feel to ask more...

Honestly, I would have also loved to use the 50-200mm, but at f3.5 on the longest end, I lose almost 2 stops as compared to the 35-100. So the shutter speed cannot freeze movements like I would like it to.

Here are some more concert assignments recently...

Once you spend more time to understand light and how your sensors capture them, you will be set free to try a lot of new things.

Shot this -0.3EV and got a slightly more saturated colour as the lighting was a nice warm sunset light.

Spot metering at work again. But in a way, I was hoping for more dynamic range. Heavy processing.

I love this shot. The metering was on the smoke. Spot metering again.

Though it was daytime, but this fella was wearing a blacksuit. Spot metered his forehead.

My picture of the week. Spot metered the highlight on the guitar.

Hope you guys like the images.

wow....my jaw drops liao.....maybe need to buy the new pro Oly camera when it is release and sell my E510 :)

how did u get the camera to focus in such a lowlight(the DS kid)? My kit lens 14-42 couldn't focus when I tried mine in a private theatre.

No PP done rite? The pictures are just awesome...

It requires about a stop more DoF - there is way too much in bokeh.

Nice colour though.

taken before the oly group gathering... Dragon boat competition... already finished when i was there thus manage juz a few shots....
