Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread (Season II)

Wow... Malaysia set has tourist warranty too, and even if without, it is still easier to bring down for servicing if needed. Anyone going to get over the weekends or early next week?
Malaysia price slightly cheaper.but a lot things related to a7r usually no stock and have to pre order for them to bring in...they give impression that there is stock out there and they just need to bring in from their warehouse

Dpreview of the A7 is up: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-alpha-a7

No Gold award, only Silver. Which I sort of see coming. May wait for the A8 then.

Pretty fair to me.
JPG quality is as they described (very overcooked)
Lens selection, is as they said. (I am interested to see if native UWA/WA will face similar issues as RF UWAs/WA if they want to make them small (and fast); Else it will be SLR sized UWA/WA)

Lossy RAW, so far ok, except that I just saw banding in the highlights in a few of my shots so may warrant investigation.
I have not seen the same issue on my landscapes shoot towards the light, so I won't worry about it for now.

Interface quirks are as they described in the article on using MF lenses, though I strongly disagree with the poor quality they got and lousy hit rates.

Overall, like all cameras its not perfect.
There are issues that can be addressed in firmware and hopefully Sony will do it.
So long as the user is willing to learn and work around the small issues, its a nice FF camera at a good size and price to me.
Those expecting the camera to do everything for them... wait for more native lenses to come out before deciding.

For Sony A-mount, the APS-C lenses are marked DT. The Full Frame lenses bear no marking, except the Zeiss lenses with FA

The E-mount APS-C lenses have no special term for them, but the Full Frame E-mount lenses are marked FE

Paiseh I typo. Ya, sony a mount crop is DT. Lol

Thanks for the update.... but you buy cameras just based on reviews?

No perfect camera out there, and if you are looking for Gold awards, I think there are a couple of APS-C and M43 cameras having Gold awards that you can take your pick. These "Gold" awards cameras do not create better IQ than the A7/R, but maybe better in some areas but lose out in others. You need to know what you are looking for.

For FF, this is quite the best for specific purpose, such as small, IQ, dynamic range, etc. Not the best in some areas, e.g. not as fast as a 5DIII, battery does not last as long, etc.

I don't think you will end up buying a A8 if you are just reading reviews. Go do some testing at the shops to find out what you like. Reviews are biased with the reviewer's own preference.

Would you have rushed to buy the A7R in a few days time if it comes out as GOLD Award?

Haha. Good one bro. To each his own.

Enjoy the wait... the rest will enjoy our a7/r

Damm should have waited for the review to come out before I hand over my hard earned cash to Sony...I thought I love this camera for what it is and that I have never enjoyed my photography more since my early Leica film camera days, somehow I just didn't realised all the shortcomings of this product and gosh can you imagine for me to walk around carrying a camera with ONLY a 80% dpreview rating and a Silver award? Sure lose face one among all those who carry a Gold award camera, who will never understand or respect me now

Putting up this junk on BnS tonight and better wait for the A8R, or maybe even the A9/RS when Sony finally get it right...my loss is your gain!

Well, DP Review has always been biased against Sony cameras. No issue if it's gotten a Silver Award because it's got a Platinum Gold Award from me and my experience in using it :bsmilie:

I don't have an A7 but I'm surprised to read this. I never found that DPreviews had much weight. They also created the whole Hoo ha and mess about shutter shock on the EP5 and then did a 'we shall not reply anymore' stand when all the other reputable reviewers said that the issue was overblown or simply didn't exist.

Cowards. DPReviews.

To sell or keep or buy , reviews are just a guide. I'll try it on my own and assess. They scored EP5 lowly but ask any EP5 user and they will very likely tell u the Dpreview article was bullshit.

+1
Well said

Some readers still have the belief that commercial sites like DPReview provide "unbiased" reviews.

Everything is paid for... media, advertisements, posters, brochures, paid REVIEWs, websites. Even forums nowadays.

Talking about the shutter shock on the EP5, nicely relate to the shutter sound of the A7/R.

I discovered a Very Weird syndrome today. After around 5000 clicks of my A7R, the overly exaggerated shutter sounds disapppeared completely. It is now completely silent just like my RX1R.

Disclaimers:

I forgot to switch on the camera when I click the shutter button.

+1 but really good ah , 5000 clicks already ;) making good use of the camera

Haha... exaggerated numbers lah. Just a joke!

Hope no one reads bindly and believe everything in forums/reviews!

LOL! When player hits 5000 clicks, permanent electronic shutter becomes unlocked and enabled. Wonder what happens at 10k clicks.

If u r using an A7 , it transforms into a A7r , and for A7r users , u automatically qualify for the A8 ;)

Yeah me too...but now I got a problem...my EVF turned completely dark and I can't seems to get it to work. Time to call Sony for the warranty issue ;)
