Official D3100 User Thread

The standard freebie is 8GB sd. With SITEX round the corner, you can consider dropping by..

normally will not consider getting dslr at sitex but since this will be my first dslr, getting at sitex where they throw in bag & dry box which i may consider but expecting it to sell at $999 at sitex with the so-called freebies included.

as for pictures getting grainy at ISO 800, I think with current gen cameras, i don't think noise at ISO 800 are too bad/obvious. Of course, is best we can take a look at picture taken with ISO 800 using D3100.

Eh... insofar... ISO 1600 is definitely usable. ISO 3200 must be used with care. Just make sure you have some form of noise reduction software and you'll pretty much be safe up to ISO 3200 if you are not demanding.

May I then assume that your D3100 isn't giving you any probs when its in ISO800? Thanks! :D

I would say no but its because my expectations are set correctly. Based on my experience, D90 at ISO 800 seems cleaner then D3100 at ISO 800. However once you hit ISO 1600, D3100 pulls ahead. I no longer have the D90 but that's what I recall from memory because when I was on D90, I would try not to raise my ISO higher then ISO 800 and usually cap it at max ISO 1250.

45mins of shooting with my D3100 on Saturday and I was raising it to ISO 1600 for certain shots and on certain occasions, doing ISO 3200. Results are pretty ok but just a note, I use lightroom 3's default noise reduction (NR) mechanism and I can say that when you are too aggressive with with the NR, the pictures will be not be as sharp and you'll need to compensate by adjusting sharpness.

Retrospectively, images out of my D700 allows me to be a bit more aggressive with the NR and not lose picture sharpness that much.

These are just my observations so your experience may vary.

For camera like Nikon D3100, It is necessary or worth getting the extended warranty provided by big shop like Harvey Norman? Thanks

Eh... as per all other electronics... its your choice but I wouldn't.

why get the extended warranty.

After 1 year, you will probably be poison by a new series DSLR

Strange phenomenon... I was shooting right after sunset whereby the sky is really blue (around 7pm) and all my photos taken disappeared. Was using the memory card given along with the camera and highly suspicious its causing it. Furthermore my battery was very low too. Did anyone else encounter this?

I hope this isn't a very inane question but what would be the best range of SD cards for a camera like the D3100?

Would a Class 10 be overkill? Reckon this might be posted somewhere 'round here so pardon my ignorance!

I've always shied away from 'freebie' SD cards, afraid of scenarios like what Beipio described above.

Same question as Beipio, anyone have questionable experiences with such 'freebie' or no name SD cards?

dont tink class 10 overkill...always better to have more? esp for HD video...looking at class 10 sd cards as well./..

heh i new too...but was searching the to reply u.

the 50mm f1.8 is it this one?http://www.nikon.com.sg/productitem.php?pid=106-387119c054

extract "This D-type Nikkor lens, like all other Nikkor D- and G-type lenses, relays subject-to-camera distance information to AF Nikon camera bodies. This then makes possible advances like 3D Matrix Metering and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash."
if i not wrong D3100 is not a AF body (D7k is though)? so does this lens serve its purpose?

i std corrected, just doing some research myself.

Hi all

Just got myself a d3100, was considering this over sony's a33 but my heart goes with nikon.

Btw, any recommendation for a cheap camera bag? Where can I buy it?:)

I think have to check if it is af-s lens, if not have to manual focus as d3100 does not have the af motor in body.

50mm f1.8 will "NOT" auto focus on D3100 .. cos D3100 has no build in monitor ...
i have tried but manual focus is a bit difficult ...may be it's just me:cool:
