Official D3100 User Thread

Hi, I am considering to buy D3100, but the salesman said D3100 focusing is slow.

Now that this is mentioned in this forum, I would like to ascertain if it is really the case, or it is a matter of disabling LV per tanjakn?

Thanks all

Set to single point AF and use a fast len. It's not that slow as the salesman describe.

Can someone tell me where I can purchase a D3100 with a reasonable price.
And what lens should I get with it.

This is the first DSLR i going to purchase hence I need some help here.
Thanks you

alanphoto 6883 0922 look for joseph or kenny ( im not affiliated with them just happy with their service )

check this for recommendation http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm

Expectations. Its definitely slow compared to my D700 and if i do not recall wrongly, my D90 is a bit faster too. Still I feel its good enough for my use.

Can some one tell me how to know the lens is fast or slow? Me use D3100 with 18-105mm lens , having focusing problem when zoom in to 105mm shooting indoor. Any advice?

Eh... I think the slow focus is taken out of context.

For 18-105, at 105mm the aperture size is at least f5.6 to f6.3? At such a small aperture, focusing will take a hit if lighting conditions are less then ideal.

Advise would be to improve the ambient lightings and if not possible, a faster aka bigger aperture lens (f1.4 to f2.8 etc). A flash with better range for focus assist light might help too but I'm not too sure as I off my focus assist since its irritating.

hi guys.. im new to photography and had just bought the nikon d3100.

i was abit lost while going through the camera.. can anyone here teach me some tips to go about it??

for example, how does the value ISO, apecture, shutter speed, white balance and exposure affect the quality of the image?

Do half shutter on the nearest point with more contrast then bring it to your composition or use manual focus.

Hi,

Will be good to subscribe to the Nikon DSLR course conduceded by Knowledge Bowl. Link as attached. You need to pay $20 for the administrative fee

I have the D700 as well and recently sold all my m43 gear and purchased the D3100. I find the D3100 made a lot more sense for me as the m43 system is not exactly small anyway. With the D3100, I stick to one system and the photo quality is better than m43 in my opinion. I am very happy with my purchase.

Shoot at auto with default settings. Auto flash turn off. The camera itself is quite forgiving. The best teacher is yourself. There is no such thing as a bad picture as it teaches you how to take better pictures next time.

Hey guys! Just want to say that I've Finally gotten my D3100!! And also, I would like to ask if anyone here knows of a good 3rd party battery that I may use as a backup. Don't really wanne get caught in a situation where I have no more battery juice to continue shooting... :D

i think most stores will not carry the third party batt yet. i had asked for it from slr-rev but they say no (maybe no stock i guess)

Ya, I wanted to get from Alan Photo but no set. Had to wait. 825 with full advertised Nikon goodies (though they give you a generic tripod)
Challenger best price was 875 cash but they will give you the original Nikon tripod which doesn't seem that great.
In the end, bought from Harvey Norman 825 Cash with the full advertised goodies (generic tripod, ball tripod will have to top up 99) but topped up 171 for extra 4 years warranty (total 5 year 3 mths warranty)

HN extended warranty start straight after the Nikon 12month warranty as per stated
on the Nikon warranty card.

Grats for the purchase! Enjoy your camera and shoot more. Just charge it after every photo shoot outing until you get the spare battery.

Thanks! Hmm, a friend of mine suggested that carrying an extra battery would be a good idea but, oh well, since there are no 3rdparty batteries for the mo, I'll just remember to charge the battery after each outing. :)
