Official Canon EOS 7D User Thread Part I

I got some info from "the-digital-picture" site regarding the AF Cross Type Points of Canon EOS 7D :

According to Canon, "The Canon EOS 7D boasts the most advanced AF system ever seen in an EOS SLR. The completely re-designed system includes a new multi-axis cross-type 19-point AF grid, where the focusing points are evenly spread out across the image plane and clearly displayed through Canon's new Intelligent Viewfinder. All 19 points are f/5.6-sensitive for both horizontal and vertical cross-type focusing [a first], while the center AF point adds high-precision diagonal cross-type sensitivity for f/2.8 and larger aperture lenses." (Canon USA Press Release) The 7D requires a lens with a maximum aperture of at least f/5.6 or wider (as reported by the lens) for AF to function.

Is this means that when we setup our lens with aperture more than f/5.6 , the cross type AF points sensor will not precisely working ?

Hi 7D'ers ,

I've a question regarding Canon 7D 19 Cross Type Sensor .

Is this feature means that the number and accuracy of AutoFocus points always steady in every stop value aperture of the lens being used ?

For example when i used lens with maximum aperture F/5.6 and F/3.5 , each has the same number and accuracy of AutoFocus points ?

i think it means that u need to use lens that have aperture that when opened to maximum must be 5.6 or smaller~!!!

so if its a f2.8 lens but you are setting at f 8, should be still ok...

Btw , do you know how to change ISO speed manually on Live View mode ?

You can use f/22 if you want because the aperture remains wide open until you press down on the shutter button.

i am wondering... is anyone ever use 5D mark II battre grip into 7D? is it improve the FPS? thx

i usually shoot without the popup, and occasionally review the photos after shooting. I can easily manage up to 1200 photos per full charge and the camera has been with me for ard 9 mths.

Just to check with you all , how many shots can your 7D get ? I can only get approx. 400 +after my first time charging . And the specification said 1000 shots ?for my second charging it's is now about 300 shots and the battery indicator show 52%
I had check with TK foto and they said the battery require seasoning ? Charging a few time than it's can up to the optimum performance ?I just wonda whether this is correct ?

I don't think it fits and even if it does, the grip does not affect the fps (unlike the Nikon D700)

Hi fellow 7D user, just sold my 500D and got the the 7D from Alan Photo today at $2260. I am kind of disappointed because I assumed that 7D if I pixel peep it's should be much sharper than my 500D who's know it's the same as my 500D. this the reason why I was complaining that my 500D not sharp after zooming in. As compared to 550D it's have built in auto sharpen proccessing. Which is if I pixel peep all the way it's still remain sharp. As for the noise o don't see much different from my 500D ISO 3200 so much noise. Should had got myself a 550D instead. I assumed 7D is a semi-pro body that will definitely include function that 550D have.

I suggest you don't pixel peep. Instead, resize your pictures to the size you normally view them at, and decide if they're good enough. Which lens are you using? Is it 'good enough' for the 18mp on a APS-C that's the 7D sensor?

I saw many senior photography after taking te shot they normally pixel peep to determine to sharpness of the shots. Well as for me I'm just being monkey see monkey do. Anyway as for forum posting normally what size do you resize to? Sorry me only 3 Months into photography. Can you please advice me the best setup for bird in flight shot?I kinda confused too much setting to do. :dunno:

this is the exact reason why many new DSLR users are advised to hold off their upgrades until they understand what is restricting them from 'advancing'.

sorry to hear about your plight. you ain't the first and won't be the last who succumbed to the BBB virus.

Aaronlim81, 800 x *** or 640 x *** will be just fine for web use. but you can also try 1024 x *** as the monitor we are using are advancing into higher resolution.

*** depends on how you compose and crop your pic. once you enter the width(ie 800) the ***(height) will be determined automatically.

there is no best setting for everything. it all depends on your lens, environment, subject etc. understand how light works, it will aid you greatly in taking good pictures.

Thanks bri technica forbyour explanation. I learnt my lesson I should try tk know every single function of this 7D before advancing to 1DmrkII/ 5DmrkII. No wonder the Alan photo salesman told meticulous keep away from forum as it's very poisonus and told me to do more pratical rather than reading more post. Initially I thought understanung lighting are more for those who work in studio. Alright I shall watch more video of understanding lighting in YouTube(that's my currently libary).

I usually resize to 900x600. Somewhere around that range will be fine. Again, your lens can be the bottleneck here if it fails to outresolve the 7D sensor.

For BIF, I would use AF expansion centre AF point, AI servo, high speed burst, and use ISO up to 3200, but watch the shutter speed to make sure it's not hitting the 1/8000 second ceiling.

Thanks for your tips. Will be testing out my new body soon. Do comment of the shots if I ever post in wildlife photography. :D

7D user here, may I ask the tripod that everyone here are using currently..

Hi guys, I realised that my sigma 18-200 lens is slightly focusig at the rear. I testes out sing a magazine with few sentences of wording, mounted my camera on a tripod and aim at the wording vertically at a 45 degree angle.SIded spot AF with evaluative metering with full auto mode on my 7D. I find that it focus more at the rear rather than at the center where I aime at. I understand that a micro adjustment whereby we can offset the rear/fore focusing. The question now is which one and how much offset should I set. There's adjustment on lens only and both body and lens. If I set all does it mean if I use another canon lens will it be affected?

I am using a Manfrotto 055xPROB tripod with my 7D. I was using the 190xprob which I found to be a very good tripod too, but found it to be a little on short side for my height. The 055 fits my needs well but weighs much more than a carbon fibre tripod which is also much more costly.

If you are in the market for a tripod, I would advise you to do your research well before deciding on a final choice. A good, well chosen tripod can last you a decade or more.
