OFFICIAL: CANON EOS 7D Mark II - User Thread

Thanks for the photos above. They look good. Could you post a few of your bird photos that appear to be 'washed out' and compare them to a photo or two taken from other cameras that don't seem to have this characteristic? I've heard the same kind of feedback from a few people in other sites. The photos are usually cropped fairly highly showing that the the photos look soft... is this what you mean by 'washed out'?
Yes,it was when I zoomed in to check out the details...the details just seems different from my usual 1D4..I think it is not fair to compare at the moment yet as I hadn't shot same subject under same condition before so I would like to take more time to bring it out for some testings to really conclude.

I had brought this camera out for some test shots. My usual birding shots doesn't seem too good on this camera as the details looks kind of "washed out" and I hope to have more time to look into this. Today brought this camera for the first time on a general family outing. So far the AF seems to be pretty good at low light and accurate. AF seems to be faster than 1D4 on low light(this is my personal feel as I didn't compare side by side to be 100% sure). I tried out the 65 points Auto selection and it is able to detect human face and locked focus. Speaking about the AF points,I feel that the centre point still out-performs the rest even though all are F2.8 cross type. Will post a few casual shots taken for today in the next post.
Probably because central point is dual cross type

No problem Turbonetics. Take your time and test the camera thoroughly to give it a fair trial.

The 1D4 also has a different and larger sensor which may be in its favour. As you know it was the last camera that used the APS-H sensor.

Regardless, I am a little concerned because there have been some people who have claimed to get better results (sharper results) from their 7D Classic. Some of these people have contacted Canon and Canon has asked them to send their cameras back to them for investigation. We are still waiting for a response from Canon.

I had a chance to test the limits(or close) of this camera this morning for wild birding and could more or less conclude that the details are pretty soft on the feathers. I was shooting the Tiger Shrike at about 8m distant with reasonably good and even lighting. The distant and lighting is good enough to test its limits IMO. I do feel that the 7D may have better details and also the 70D which i had seen shots by Meng Huat. I will post a few of the shots in the next thread. I shot them both in RAW and JPEG but processed in JPEG using LR as iam more used to the platform. The RAW files will be kept until updates on LR to finalise if its software issue, but in the meantime I don't think it is.

How much does the 7D Mark II sell for without GST?

In HK it goes for 13,000. So nearly the same.

Hi Kenneth

I used ISO 3200 :) should go further.
Overall the burst is fast the move tracking good.
I am not the type of using burst mode, I just wait and track the moment.
For sports is good camera but I still prefer 5D3.
Maybe I just hold this 7D less than 8 mins. Haven't observed others function

Thanks for the reply. ISO3200 looks good for a crop for websize. Thinking if I should get the 7D2 to compliment my 5D3.

I am also thinking of the same setup... 5D3 + 7D2. I am considering upgrading my previous 5D Classic + 7D Classic setup.

I know that the IQ of the 7D2 will never match the IQ of the 5D3 however I am getting a little concerned of the early reports of softness in the 7D2. I'm not sure if the problem is with just a few cameras or whether the issue is characteristic of all 7D2's. The photos posted by Turbonetics above look quite good but we need to see zoomed in crops to see the feather detail up close. The 5D3 is quite good with detail and I'm wondering if the 7D2 can match it closely. I know that its still early, but is there anyone that can share their experience with both cameras?

Didn't really try it in detail, but I didn't encounter softness issue, but 1 thing bout mkII is the AF, it's more consistent den my 7D classic, more hit rates too

Any update on the stocks on just the body? Still thinking will it be good enough for IQ if we dont push the ISO beyond 6400.

What do u intend to shoot with 7D2 should u get one?
The shots posted above are reasonably sharp but it was on full crop that loss of details are more pronounce,it was how I judge.
I believed shooting sports should not be a problem.

Can't give a % of what I shoot. I shot landscape in SG and holiday. Holiday shooting and underwater macro and wide angle. Quite wide of shooting I will say. My concern is the low light sometime when i wanna shoot at night n sometime indoor where flash light is not possible.

Remember to take into consideration how close will u be with the subjects and how much u need to crop later on.
Base on the ONE FC shots,he was shooting as an official photographer right on top of the rink and with 70-200mm + APSC cropped,i guess the photos are cropped minimally.

Hi Turbonetics

Just to clarify. Yes as cage photographer but not from the top but thru the cage :)
It's minimal crop as I used 70-200
I would like to have this 7D2 for sports. Great camera if cannot afford 1Dx :)

I intend to use it for birding, sports and events photography as well as a back-up to my 5D3. The photos of the birds you took look reasonably sharp. It looks like the softness issues I've read elsewhere may be due to user error.
