Shallow DOF is useful in isolating subject from cluttered background and/or foreground... :) However, like I said, some people don't like it very much: they want BOTH eyes and BOTH ears of subject to be in perfect focus EVERY time... :D

DOF of f/2.8 on FF can be shallow or deep depending on focal length and subject distance.

On another note, this EXIF analysis of the best Reuters photos in 2012, shows that 45.7% of street/journalistic photos are taken at f/2.8 or smaller aperture settings on FF cameras. This substantiates my view that APS-C and m43 are actually more than enough for most people since f/2.8 DOF can be easily achieved with f/1.4 and f/1.8 lenses on m43 and APS-C platforms respectively. As such, there is really no compelling reason for anyone to move into FF territory unless one desires super shallow DOF.

It is a preference and individual style on the DOF......

But it it is a portraits, I think the DOF cannot be too shallow... good to isolate the background, but not to blur the subject.......... some people use the eyes and ears as the standard (that this 2 points much be sharp)....

I was thinking that a FF f2.8 is more than enough for most people too..... for APSC, you need to invest in primes.... and most f1.8 and below primes are costly....

I had a look at these photos and spent about 2 hours unintentionally. They are very good and easily draw you in to read the stories behind each one. *** W A R N I N G *** Do not look at these unless you've got lot's of time to spare! BEST Reuters PHOTOs in 2012.

Personally, I think the Canon 35 f/2 IS (new), 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8 are 'affordable' and enough to meet the needs of most folks for APS-C mount....

Is the 35 f/2 IS already out in S'pore?

The 50 f1.4 & 85 f1.8 are still considered ok...

35mm f2 IS is goonna be $1030 or so, like the 24mm & 28mm f2.8 IS range..... so I think it is not so affordable.... Am sure 50mm F1.4 replacement will be in this price range too.........

I was thinking more on the L lens when I made the remark not so affordable.... 50mm f1.2, 85mm f1.2.....

I had the 5D3 and sold it. Plan to replace with 6D.

Reason: (1) 5D3 is ~ 950 g vs 6D ~ 770 (both with batteries and card) (2) cannot afford to buy a walkabout lens (e.g. 24-105 f/4L IS or 24-70 f/4L IS) with 5D3 whereas price of 6D+kit lens ~ 5D3 (3) don't need many advanced features on 5D3 (fps, ruggedness, 100% VF etc etc) except maybe its AF sensor; will try to make do with 6D AF sensor.

Once we enter interchangeable lens cameras, choice of camera and lens becomes highly personal as it based on specialized needs. NEVER make a choice just because others think FF is the best or xxx brand is the best. Choose according to what you need, just remember that. :D

I like the wifi feature of 6d. Great to share pictures with friends on the spot. Is there any add-on for 5dmk3 to do this ?

Yes but it's for transfer only I think, no remote control possible.

Both..pretty cool..the only thing is the lagginess of the Wi-Fi

are u sure both ?? cause i read it just can for still. not movie.

The 6D is capable of both movie and stills. In fact there are several samples of movies made by the 6D on the internet. Just Google for movies made by 6D.

Doodah is right. Buying one or the other cameras is highly personalized. Buy based on needs, not what you hear from the marketing juggernaut or what appears to be 'in fashion' at the moment.

Personally, I bought the 5D3 and I am a very satisfied user. However, if the 6D met my needs and I bought that one instead, I would be just as happy. I once went through 3 tripods before I settled on the one that met my needs. In that case I did not do my homework in advance nor had I thought about my specific needs (lightweight, travel, flexibility, etc). It's very important to spend some time to do some research aligned with the needs you've already established.
