Bro. Parfocal means the focus will stay at around the same spot even if u zoom in or out. It does not mean the 5d3 can af with that lens. Its two separate thing. The 5d3 can af with all th canon lenses in video mode.

hmm, maybe I misunderstood the below comment on "video is manual focus only" and I went to try..

Video is manual focus only :) Once you zoom, need to manual refocus…it's a skill and i believe there are "professionals" hired just to focus when zooming for videos

i think what people want is continous af in video mode. and not just af. they want the af to track the subject when it moves. but i think that is quite a tall order. only a few models in the mkt can do that if i am not wrong. none of it is from canon.

I see.. thanks for the correction :) reading problem on my part :bsmilie:

anyways out of curiosity, anyone has used or tried both 1D4 and 5D3 before can give some comment on how 5D3 can compare to 1D4?

One wonders why :) There are quite a few models int he market from other brands that do continous AF during video actually and that is one thing many people actually want..it's definitely possible since others are already doing it but i wonder why Canon chose to leave it out even with the 5D3..what's their rational..it cannot be because they don't know how to…it definitely is because they don't want to..but why.

so that they can come out with another model soon that can "gradually" do it.. to continuously earn profits :bsmilie:

because the continuous af does not operate smoothly enough to make sense. for consumer camcorders, it is ok. for something that has lesser depth of field, the focusing will mess up the filming.

I've heard and also read that it is because the professionals in Hollywood do not want AF. Filmmakers prefer to to do the AF themselves... for what reason, I do not know. The 5D3 is obviously geared towards professionals and I guess Canon listened to them.

I tested the 16-35 II.
It is a parfocal lens.

Focusing is a key part of film making, automated focusing does not allows art direction.

edit: first post btw, decided to make a new account since changing system back to Canon. Still waiting for Canon support center to have their 5D3 toolkit, mine got back-focus issue.

Hmm, not sure if it's me, but I read the above statement with "envy", especially if this is your first camera.....

Maybe can use the "green" mode first then. CSC do provide training on all new DSLR. I saw someone there with 1 series in the past.

5DMkIII have green box mode?

Heh~ Chill man! Be happy with what you have.

Cheers!

Haha, yeah I am more than delighted with my grand old 5Dc, but I drool the 5D3 as it has many features that I will use in my shooting :)

I guess 5 series do have the "green" mode, which most of ius don't take notice of or use.

Yup sometimes we have to open up our mindsets and accept that not all people who buy a 1D/5D are seasoned users.

Maybe they are new to photography but can afford a high end camera, hopefully to take better pictures? Maybe they had been XXXD users and are new to the new functions on XD series? Or maybe they are ship jumpers from the dark side? Hopefully, with the complimentary course, they can make better use of their new camera :)

Nope. I didn't get one when I got the camera.

Read some reviews of pros who used both 1D4 and 5D3. The general consensus is that 1D4's AF is still better than 5D3 in normal conditions. But if you need to shoot in extreme low light and high ISO settings, they would prefer 5D3 over 1D4.

Now they are waiting for the 1DX, the "ultimate" EOS to see if they can have an extreme camera providing the extreme fast AF of 1D series, with the high ISO capabilities of 5D3 (due to the new Digic 5) processors.

1D4 AF is still better than 5D3 from your statement.so do u mean that shooting in extreme low light conditions, the AF for 5D3 will be better?
And does ISO affect the AF?
Iam kinda confuse if u link them together or not?

From my knowledge,5D3 high ISO performance is definitely better in noise controlling. This in turn is more suitable for low light conditions.
Is this what U trying to imply?

Does anyone know if there's any notable difference between the single point spot, single spot, single + 4 spots or single + 8 spots AF? I've been using single+4 spots so I can see the AF boxes easier. Depending on the subject, it gets lost in the clutter quite easily sometimes.

I can't say I can see much difference using my naked eye...

Hmm based on feedback from those pro, one main reason why they say they prefer 5D3 in low light is because of the clean high ISO produced from 5D3. It's a FF sensor and the NR tech is more advanced. And also, there are feedback that 1D4 do poorly in extreme low light, like candle lit lighting. In such extreme condition, they find that 5D3 performs better. Other than such low light scenarios, they would prefer 1D4 for the lighting fast and snappy lock-on for AF. That's what I understand from my readings..
