Official Canon 550D User Thread Part IV

Thanks for the feedback. Very keen to get the 70-200 now, but cost more than the 550D body , kaoz!

i might be getting 550D with the 18-55mm lens but i am very particular about the quality of the night shots taken without tripod.

i appreciate any comments and sample photos with regard to my concern.

Any 550D user using the 70-200F4 IS? Is it an overkill for the 550D?

my first post. just been browsing through all inputs here in CS. i do have a 550D + 70-200 f4 IS.... not overkill but looks to me an overjoy :D love using this lens...

good for real close up portraits without the intrusion. speed and IQ are really good! I have the non-IS version since I won't use this indoors because mine's the f4 version. I too am using the 550D. you will come to realise that most good lens always cost more than the body.
Buy what you need not what you want! =D

then perhaps you should consider a faster lens instead of the kit lens..

Even with a v fast lens, you might need a tripod.

But generally the ISO performance of 550D is pretty decent for beginners. :>

Ya now considering between IS and non IS. Need IS for outdoor daytime playground/swimming pool shots? Indoor I think no chance unless flash liaoz. Think got to go simulate the f-stop using my 18-135 to find out.

I don't know about you, but for outdoor daytime, it is good enough without IS. if you are going for action pictures, it is difficult to frame anyway at the long end, so its kind of doesn't justify the use of IS since the subject is moving around. Now, unless you are going for subjects which are still and you need to use the long end and need to frame it well, then I guess the IS is for you. Personally, I wouldn't pay 2 times the amount for IS, besides... the non-IS version has better IQ! =D

Just my opinion~

Get the 4L IS. Believe me, you will appreciate the IS especially when shooting at the longer focal lengths using the 70-200 lens... regardless of whether you are shooting in the day or at night. Unless of course, you are intending to shoot with the lens mounted on tripod all the time.

The 4L IS has completely redesigned optics compared to the non-IS version.. it really is more than just the addition of an image stabiliser. The 4L IS has much better IQ than the non-IS and is well worth the extra cost.

16-35 ($1800) + 70-200 ($2850) = $4650

Both L lens.

Are the 2 lenses the MK II versions? If so the prices that you got them for are really below market price.

get the IS version, you WILL appreciate the extra feature. f4 isnt fast but it isnt that slow either. with 550D's ISO performance, you should have less to worry abt. need be, just bump it up.

Camera Maker: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS 550D
Image Date: 2011-02-04 18:17:54 +0800
Focal Length: 300.0mm
Aperture: f/6.3
Exposure Time: 0.0040 s (1/250)
ISO equiv: 3200

Exposure Bias: none
Metering Mode: Spot
Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)
White Balance: Auto
Flash Fired: No (enforced)

shot this at a circus, me seated some 20-30 rows away. learn how to meter your subjects too, it will aid in nailing the right shutter speed.

When I know what my camera can do and what it can't.

In the long foreseeable future I also plan to change to full frame.

1) VF too small and not bright enough
2) I used my friend's 7D, the auto focussing on the 550D cannot nail low-light as good as the 7D
3) Number of AF points is limiting - Alternatively, can do manual focussing, but back to point #1 (VF too small, hard to manual focus)

I do however appreciate it's weight. lens + body w/grip + 580 ex ii is already darn heavy, so I'm very thankful that the body is not that heavy. I can't imagine a similar set-up on a 7D w grip, my arms will surely ache.

Thanks for the inputs regarding the 70-200 f4.

I've checked prices around, but would like to ask for your opinions regarding this lens. Do L lens have such good quality that I can confidently get a grey set? Because local set and grey set difference about $270ish for the IS version.
