Official Canon 550D User Thread Part IV

hi all pro n seniors

i am thinking of getting 550d or the next generation.

i will be shotting modelling and fashion (in my room), what type of lens will be more suitable? Kit II?

for marco shotting, is there anything that is attached to the lens? or is just another lens i need to purchase?

Do i need to get an external flash or the built in is more then enough?

Kit I is good enough if you use it in your room. If you have more money to spend then i suggest you go for Kit II or get a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 for the aperture. You can get Raynox 250 and attached it to your lens for macro shots.

haha im buying from them this week! Price really too good to resist & other CS-ers also have past exp with this shop so it shouldn't be a problem i guess :X

it can be a problem if the shop goes out of business, or if they don't repair/calibrate your equipment to the standard you require.

If it's just modelling and fashion photography in your room a 18-55(Kit 1) would be enough.

For macro shooting, you can either buy a dedicated macro lens or you can buy extension tubes or conversion lens.

which ext tube or conversation lens is good?
will be shooting ear rings/stubs n gems n rings

Raynox 250 is a good lens to begin with or 150 which has a lower magnification.

If you have the extra money to spare can go ahead get kit 2 but generally kit 1 is enough for your needs already.

Raynox 250 market price is around $120ish or you can buy it 2nd hand from some seniors here.

You mean for what job? Shooting your earrings and studs?

for the ext flash, like shooting models.

i think ear ring don need flash right? just the setting can do the job, if not the flash will make it over exposed...

pls correct me if i am wrong
:)

My friend just bought a set of 550d with 18-135mm lenses,
2 class 4 8gb sd, mini blower, screen protector, a canon bag
And a tripod redeem from canon for $1499.
Is the price ok?

Shooting models definitely need an ext flash to really bring out the beauty of the model.
For earing also can use flash to make it more 'dramatic' in a sense.
Take a look at this video to have a better understanding.

I suggest shooting with your kit lens first. Generally 18mm should be wide enough even though there is the crop factor. But if you really want an UWA for scenery(landscapes) than the 10-22mm should be enough for your needs.

However you did state that you are shooting interior(indoors) which i feel you MIGHT need a faster lens so maybe you can consider tokina 11-16 f/2.8?

saw it... woh... damn cool lo.... but if i going to do dat.. i will go crazy, as it's only 1 pair... n is like 3 pieces for $2... T.T

Hi jz bought 550D yesterday with kit 1 lens..wonderful..learning to use P mode and aperture mode first..

Need to ask wat kinds of lens to shoot for low light scenery ? thanks !
iF zOOM lens which one should I get ?
May need to shoot ice scrupltures and lighting at night in winter.

If to freeze the human especially kids is to use any special lens or jz meddle with the shutter speed ?

Thanks so much for any advice that you guys can give me.. trying to locate the previous thread for reading and improvement.

for low light, go for a fast lens (i.e. low f value).. can try canon 17-55 f2.8.. or tokina 11-16 f2.8 if u require wide-angle.. or even a prime lens like canon 50 f1.8/f1.4/f1.2, etc..
for telephoto, can try canon 70-200 f4 L.. a canon 55-250 might be a much cheaper alternative thou..

to freeze motion, use TV mode & a faster shutter speed (e.g. 1/1000)..

hope it helps.. ;)

1. cheaper option for low light:
kit lens + tripod (+ stop down the aperture in aperture-priority mode for better IQ)

(the not-so-cheap option is to get a lens with a larger aperture: e.g. Sigma 30/1.4, Tamron 17-50/2.8, Canon 17-55/2.8, but be careful of the shallower depth of field).

2. for kids:
you can shoot shutter priority 1/60 onwards (this will increase the ISO). a faster lens would allow you to shoot the same shutter speed at a lower ISO. A lens with fast focusing (especially a lens with ring USM) helps, or if not you can use pre-focusing (but this doesn't help if you are using AI-Servo or AI-Focus mode) to capture kids.

hi everybody!!!
got my 550D today hahaha!
so happy!

Thanks for your valuable advise! wat do u mean by careful of shallow depth of field ?

One fren recommend me buy Tamron 17-55 mm f1.4 i think... for night shots..gd ?
