Official Canon 550D User Thread Part IV

Just because now got 60D so 550D is useless? Tell me the things about 60D that will make a difference over the 550D. And I mean huge difference.

Hi all,

I am thinking of adding to my equipment..

got budget to buy one of the following only..

(a) Tripod
(b) External Flash
(c) Sigma 17-50 f2.8

Which one better? currently only have a kit lens. Tripod will help with better night photography. Flash for better shoot in low light. same as f2.8 lens.

they are not entirely the same.

For tripod,

Which is a good choice for 550d?
I think the more expensive one the better ;) .... joking....
It depends on what lens you want to use, the overall weight of your setup.
Then if you want to travel oversea, you need a lightweight tripod (if weight does matter)

My tripod setup is Benro A350ex with a Surui head.

I'm sure you can do a search in this forum to find your perfect tripod.

Can't wait for this Sat's 550D Gathering ! Model and Lighting Equipment is fully sponsored by SGCAMERASTORE !!

Hi there
But anyways, I'm looking to get a Sigma 30mm f1.4 for much better IQ compared to kit lens that I have now. And I want to take normal composition photos at standard field of view. Good choice?

Bought a piece 2 weeks ago @ $740 local set

+ Perform very well in low light condition, w/o need of flash/tripod in most cases.
+ bokeh easily attained, very nice for portraiture, furry animals & abstract
-Not narrow/zoom enuff for street candid (unless go very near "object" and get noticed) and not wide enuff to cover much background for diff composures (have to step backward in a lot of cases).
-Mine got focusing issue and the cali appt is 3weeks from date of call...
-sucker for battery as it hunt for focus in the dark
+very much quieter than canon 35mm f2.0
+very nicely weighted esp with batt grip
+very robust feel, firm focusing mechanism

Just sharing my opinion

How do you go around the focus hunting issue? i suppose high contrasting subject of focus at low light shouldn't be an issue? With low contrast subject in low light, flash assisted focus should help? I so want this lens but 700+ is rather painful to part with. Hehe.

Still on? I m interested. Exam just end recently.

If yes still got space? Venue?

Please advice.

Have not try the flash assisted function but i have a feelin that the flash will also fire off after the assisted focus... anyone can help to answer this?

If its too dark for auto-focus, i suggest turn on LCD screen to "live view" then zoom in 10x and focus manually. Most pic focus in such manner will have much sharper focus as far as i m concern. Drawback is to achieve such focus a lot of time and batt wasted...

$450 is a huge one for me to consider, and the seller to gain too.
i read a lot of comparison for 60D, and most goes in favor to nikon D7000.

can give me a tip for mall photograph without flash ? What ISO and shutter speed to set?
I tried to take picture inside Wisma Atria @night, shooting a friend from 3rd floor and try to get the Christmas tree at 1st floor as background, the result is yellow-ish, :(

shoot with tamron 17-50 f/2.8

i'm guessing ISO800, 1/15 to 1/30 sec at f/2.8 (based on night photos i took on a recent trip). if possible, put the camera on a tripod (or on a support) and shoot ISO200-400, possibly stopping down the aperture.

use live-view mode to decide which white balance setting gives the best result (alternatively shoot raw & PP or use manual white balance setting)

hi guys! i'm not sure if this question was posted already so please bear with me.

i recently shoot a video at PAL 25fps in my 550D. There's no problem when i played back the video in my cam. i downloaded it to may laptop. the downloaded video is a ".MOV" file with another ".THM" file. i tried to run the video in VLC; however, the video didn't run smoothly. it'll play for about 3 seconds then stop then run again for about 3 seconds again then stop and it goes on and on. Something like that. can somebody help on this matter please?

Hey guys, do you all recommending buying the 550d body only, Jap model dubbed Kissx4 from ddelectronics.sg?

http://ddelectronics.com.sg/products/Canon-EOS-Kiss-X4{47}T2i-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-Only.html

As my original plan is to get the 24~105 @ $1.4k with the 550d @ $901 from them, in my opinion, the price for this package is quite a good deal.
I understand the shortcomings of the 24~105 on a crop body but im fine with that and baisically I think its range fits the kind/genre of photography I want to shoot, quite well.

Opinions are welcomed and appreciated, thanks!

i did a few videos too in Nov while in Genting, i got the same files. I played them back on VLC, no problems. My settings were 25fps, 1920x1080 but on NTSC (but i don't think this is the cause). Maybe use another player to play again or which version of VLC are u using?
