Official Canon 550D User Thread Part IV

Hi..

Thanks for the advise. u point out my main concern. Usually if i wan to take night people and scenery i cant do it with my set up now. Cos use flash u will not get the scenery. and i do not have a tripod so having long exposure is difficult. i wonder does a 2.8 aperture take good picture of night scenery and people?

I think good flash will be helpful for cases like u have good lighting of the background and the people is "dark" due to shadow casting on the face. correct me if i am wrong. still learning.. ;)

2.8 aperture usually has too small a depth-of-field to take people with night scenery--e.g. if the person is standing, say 2-3m away, and the scenery is at infinity, you won't be able to have both in focus.

Hi, I'm currently using the 24-105L as my main walkabout lens. The 18-55mm kit lens (used for a few weeks) has been retired to the dry cabinet. ;p

Am very happy with the reach that the lens gives me at the 105mm end. 24mm isn't wide enough if you're taking a group picture in confined spaces like a classroom.

If you're going to do event photography, you will have to jostle for position with other photographers. The 24mm end with our crop cam means that we'll have to stand further back to take the same group picture. Other photographers with wider angle lens will be in front and most probably blocking you from taking a clean shot.

Aperture wise, F4 gives me some nice bokeh. For indoor dim lighting shoots, I've got myself an external flash. Hope this helps! :)

Am considering the 10-22mm or 70-200mm f4L IS as the next lens.

Thanks for the reply!
The reason for asking opinions about the lens is because I wanted to get a 550D body with that walkabout lens soon. Researched online and found out that the 550D crop body will make the 24mm less wide when mounted on and that was my only concern for that lens...

Guess I would have to see if the wideness of the lens suit me before purchasing, appreciate your feedback!! ;)

Hey guys,

I am not up to skill to play lens yet but recently a fren bought a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 and she keep commenting is good for shooting... I have not go in depth with lens yet can someone give some comment abt this lens. Comment in the sense of this model is good for shoot what mode (people, landscape and etc..)

Thinking about getting the phottix grip for my 550D too, but not sure how is it compared to the original one?

i am using the original grip since day 1. and until now, i have no regrets with the quality. i do have friends who purchased the 3rd party grips and end up sick of the 3rd party grip, which they end up buying the original grip.

if you are talking about long term, get the original. else, just get the 3rd party grip, will do.

The answer to your question is just in the quote, 5 post above your post... :bsmilie:

I was browsing around then I came to this Extensible Extension Tube. Seem like more convenient as compared to the stacked type extension tube. Anyone used these before?
I was looking for a dedicated macro lens but the price is quite high, I would like to recieve some feedback if extension tube is a good alternative since it can be used on all lenses.
I heard that raynox dcr250 is a good alternative but it will caused heavy vignetting on my tamron 17-50

hi guys,

can i check if anyone out there knows if there are other available type of "picture style" setting which can be use on 550D.

I remember reading some threads on picture style for 500D sometime ago, but cant seems to find any for 550D.

Please advise if you happen to know.
Thank you :)

It's not too bad, but it might be possible to get it for slightly less. If you haven't already done so, try calling at least a few of the stores listed on the price guide in the forum.

FYI, I bought the same kit (550D kit I) a little over a month ago for about $25 less, which isn't really all that far from the quote you've received.

Parisilk at Holland V. If I recall correctly, SLRR quoted the same price, while a couple of the other stores I called weren't far off with their quotes.

by the way, the shop sign of SLR Revolution @ Funan is now changed to Bally Photo... (not sure what this means). I went there last Saturday.

Hi,

I'm considering getting a Canon 550D as my first DSLR to start out with but am unsure about which kit/lens I should go for.

I was initially considering Kit I with the 18-55mm lens, but after checking out some of the recommended shops, I'm now considering Kit II instead since it has a longer reach.
But I've also been recommended to get the body with a Tamron 18-200mm lens instead.
Another possibility is the Kit I + EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS but I'm not sure if the wider aperture size would make a big difference? This last kit was suggested by a friend who is in Japan, but I'm not sure if the Canon DSLRs in Japan are any different from those sold in SG as they are under different names (KISS X4 in Japan vs EOS 550D in SG)?

Thanks in advance!
