Hi all,
Have been using my 550d for awhile already. i find that night photography is difficult. The flash sometimes make the photo over exposed. I am think of buying an external flash or 17-55 f2.8 lens. Any comment which one should i get first?
Thank you.

1. if you want to take people + scenery in the background:
- an f/2.8 lens isn't necessary: you'll usually need to stop down the aperture anyway so that both the people & scenery are in focus.
- with an external flash you might have trouble getting the background and the people at similar exposures unless you use a "slow-sync" setting.
- hence i would suggest i tripod here (although people have to hold still while taking the photo).
2. if it's just scenery, no people, then forget about flash as it won't have the range. A large-aperture prime or a f/2.8 lens will do most of the time, just be careful of the shallow depth of field. a f/3.5, f/4.0 lens will also do if you use a tripod, or can find something flat to put your camera on (and set the 2 second timer / use the remote).
3. if you want to take people only, then maybe the flash is a good idea.

Hi..
Thanks for the advise. u point out my main concern. Usually if i wan to take night people and scenery i cant do it with my set up now. Cos use flash u will not get the scenery. and i do not have a tripod so having long exposure is difficult. i wonder does a 2.8 aperture take good picture of night scenery and people?
I think good flash will be helpful for cases like u have good lighting of the background and the people is "dark" due to shadow casting on the face. correct me if i am wrong. still learning..![]()
