i think u should just go by lens sharpness to decide instead of lens popularity. Read the reviews on www.photozone.de for more info. From what i have read, the sigma 17-50 f2.8 HSM OS is a pretty sharp lens that can be compared to canon 17-55 f2.8 but abit cheaper.

compared to the tamron 17-50 which is significantly cheaper but also quite sharp, the sigma is better but more expensive. if u think that the additional AF speed and OS does not justify the extra cost then just buy the tamron version

Sigma 17-50 2.8 "OS" "HSM" vs the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS USM

The tamron 17-50 2.8 non vc is just without the IS and USM feature. But price comparison don't justify so I'm leaning towards Tamron.

Usually if you want the range like . . .
- 18-200
-18-270 by Tamron
- 18-250 by Sigma

- - - You won;t be able to enjoy better quality pictures in terms of Image Quality (IQ).

That's why I recommend a short focal Mid -> Zoom lenses.

Why? . . .Cos
- Short Mid -> Zoom lenses (ie, 17-50) have constant f2.8
- Better handling under low light

Canon EF85mm f/1.8 USM
Why I suggest this ? . . . Cos
- You already have a 17-50 range, no point buying 35mm, 50mm primes to overlap.
- Trust me, if you are shooting at outdoors, this lens is just nice ! I've borrowed this and shoot a couple of times.
- This is also a good street lenses for taking street pictures.
- Gives acceptable bokeh
- Very good handling under low light.

Canon EF-S15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS USM
Range is good, cos at 15mm you can capture beautiful landscape, and all the way till 85mm, you are able to capture streets, portraits blah blah, so on and so forth.

However, do take note that this lens might lose out compared to T 17-50 2.8 under low light.

Why I say this ?
- The meaning of low light,
Usually it depends on how fast the lens is. How much light can enter the lens. So the smaller the number of aperture, ie, f1.2, f1.4, f1.8, f,2.8

Bottom line;

In my humble opinion,
I feel that having just 2 lenses will do,

Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Sigma 17-50 f2.8
Tokina 16-50 f2.8
Chose either one.

Canon 85mm f1.8
Canon 50mm f1.8 - - - Okay, if you are "scared" about focal length, try this first. Cheap -- $110 off from the Buy Sell section easily can get one.

wah very difficult this DSLR thingy, and after tons of reading still half past six.

Seems like the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 fits most of my photo taking range. But there is the VR and non-VR type?

Also, will the 1000D and 550D differ much in terms of picture quality? Movie is not so important as I still have my Video Cam and Pany to fall back on.

EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM comparing to the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 no fight under low light.

For me, i'll highly recommend you 17-50 f2.8

Sorry but whats the definition of low light in DSLR terms? Paiseh I didnt specify my situation under low light, but it will be in places like at home at night and in indoor theme parks.

Don't wanna overkill and get the f2.8 and then realise that low light in your terms mean at night at Bishan Park. :bsmilie:

I think you mean the "VC" or non "VC". VC in Tamron refers to Vibration Compensation

I dont think there's a big difference. But the 550D is a newer model, compared to the 1000D, and the built of both bodies, the buttons, the 550D is still a better "feel".

And see, you have a 550D, both taking pictures, and video with full HD. So look, will you carry 1000D + 2 lenses + a Video camera when you can just bring a 550D + 2 lenses which is much lighter ?

Yes Low light is under conditions like shopping centre or any places indoor.

lets do a comparision:
18-55 kit lens at 18mm f3.5
at f3.5, maybe ISO 1600 to cover shutter speed of 1/55 so no blur shots.

17-50 f2.8 at 17mm f2.8
at f2.8, maybe you just need ISO 800 or even 400 to cover shutter speed of 1/55

Thus bottom line is the lower ISO, the cleaner the shots are.

Low light as in home could be one of them as well! Indoor theme parks not all are brightly lit.

Trust me, go with the f2.8 you won't regret. Instead of getting the standard kit which won't be as good under low light, when you realise you need it, you'll have to sell it off then get this, waste more money imo.

Home light, if you're saying you always take picture at places that are VERY bright, then i would say you won't need the f2.8 lens

At $1.4k, it's not worth to me.

Crumpler bag and free gifts don't really worth.

I would rather get the brand new body alone, and get a $100 18-55 kit lens cos I know I will upgrade to 2.8 later on.
