Suggestion opening up for 550D USER Gathering in October. Do SUGGEST !

Hi all,

I have a question hoping bros/sis can help. Was thinking of posting at Newbie section, but I'd rather get answers here as I very much like the 550D already.

Anyway, I am using a P&S camera, namely the Panasonic TZ7. The image quality to me is actually very good already. But problem comes when:
1) Shooting under low light, noise aplenty, and I dun like to use flash as picture dun look natural.
2) Shooting moving kids. Can see Master Wong's "wu ying jiao" shadow kick, blurry blurry all over.

My question is, will a 550D with Kit Lens II solve my problem? Or actually a 1000D is good enough already? I'm hoping it will enable some Bokeh shots as well.

Many thanks for reading, and even more thanks if you can give me your opinion.

If you have problems shooting under lowlight, don't get the kit lens.

Kit 1 - 18-55 f3.5-5.6
Kit 2 - 18-135 f3.5-5.6

I would suggest the 550D.

Why ? Cos . . .
• 550D have video, HD video makes it ideal to video your kids whereas 1000D don't have.
• 550D is using Digic 4 processor, whereas 1000D is using Digic 3 processor so both of them different processors.

What lens I feel it's good for you: Lowlight, range, price
• 17-50 range series
- Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC - $620
- Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS USM - $1.3k (might be too expensive)

• Prime series
- Canon 85 f1.8 USM - $560 Since the 17-50 f2.8 covers 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, just get an additional higher length to bundle it up.

With these two lenses, I'm sure you will be able to capture nice scenes of your kids.

Basic calculation:
- Canon 550D Body - $1.2k
- Tamron 17-50 f2.8 - $620
- Canon 85 f1.8 - $560
Total: $2380. And these 2 lenses are fantastic under low light conditions as they are fast enough compared to kit lenses.

Hi Odyssey-Boy,

thanks for your reply.

Read some users also recommending the Tamron 17-50 in another thread. I really like the slight wider angle it have though not as wide as the pany (the 25mm from my Pany really shiok taking in those landscape and big family photos). However, I am really concerned about the short range. Browsing through the photos I take during vacations, while 70%-80% are in the 25mm range, there are shots that I take up to 200mmish though not many. Got to really evaluate the pics that I took and consider this option.

I'll probably skip the Canon 85 f1.8 - $560 for now. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but is the 85mm equivalent to 136mm on the 550D? If thats so then its quite a zoom, fixed zoom some more, very difficult to convince myself if I ever need this lens.

Will the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM be very far off from the Tamron? Because it will give me the wide angle that I'm used to having, and the longer range which I would prefer to have. But importantly is it any good under low light and moving kids.

Thanks a million.;)

Fixed zoom? I think there is no such thing. Maybe you mean fixed long focal length? :)

Usually if you want the range like . . .
- 18-200
-18-270 by Tamron
- 18-250 by Sigma

- - - You won;t be able to enjoy better quality pictures in terms of Image Quality (IQ).

That's why I recommend a short focal Mid -> Zoom lenses.

Why? . . .Cos
- Short Mid -> Zoom lenses (ie, 17-50) have constant f2.8
- Better handling under low light

Canon EF85mm f/1.8 USM
Why I suggest this ? . . . Cos
- You already have a 17-50 range, no point buying 35mm, 50mm primes to overlap.
- Trust me, if you are shooting at outdoors, this lens is just nice ! I've borrowed this and shoot a couple of times.
- This is also a good street lenses for taking street pictures.
- Gives acceptable bokeh
- Very good handling under low light.

Canon EF-S15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS USM
Range is good, cos at 15mm you can capture beautiful landscape, and all the way till 85mm, you are able to capture streets, portraits blah blah, so on and so forth.

However, do take note that this lens might lose out compared to T 17-50 2.8 under low light.

Why I say this ?
- The meaning of low light,
Usually it depends on how fast the lens is. How much light can enter the lens. So the smaller the number of aperture, ie, f1.2, f1.4, f1.8, f,2.8

Bottom line;

In my humble opinion,
I feel that having just 2 lenses will do,

Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Sigma 17-50 f2.8
Tokina 16-50 f2.8
Chose either one.

Canon 85mm f1.8
Canon 50mm f1.8 - - - Okay, if you are "scared" about focal length, try this first. Cheap -- $110 off from the Buy Sell section easily can get one.

EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM comparing to the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 no fight under low light.

For me, i'll highly recommend you 17-50 f2.8 :)

- Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS USM - $1.3k (might be too expensive)

Care to share which shop can I get the 17-55 at 1.3K?

Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Sigma 17-50 f2.8
Tokina 16-50 f2.8

which one is better?

Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Sigma 17-50 f2.8
Tokina 16-50 f2.8

which one is better?

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 -- popular..

Sigma 17-50 f2.8 -- new lens by sigma, before that was sigma 18-50 f2.8

Tokina 16-50 f2.8 -- wide by 1mm, not so popular.

Going up to Sepang and Pasir Gudang end of this year..

Anyway, im fan o subarus sinc e my whole family is stucked up with subarus ranging from impreza, foresters, legacys, exigas..

Oh seems like you are from a rich family. I like Lancer Ex and Honda Accord JDM Euro R as one of my favourite Japanese car.

Thats pretty normal for a average household like me. Well, my uncles like to zhng a bit on their cars..

For Japanese imports,

my favorite is the Civic Type R FD2R, 2.0 K20a 225bhp. Handles very well on track especially in Sepang.

Second will be the Impreza STi, 2.5 Turbo 300bhp, upgrade stage 3, so around 500bhp, lose on track, but the straight is awesome

Rich people will be the lambos and ferraris ya..

HeHe yar the Type R k20a is a good car.

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 -- popular..

Sigma 17-50 f2.8 -- new lens by sigma, before that was sigma 18-50 f2.8

Tokina 16-50 f2.8 -- wide by 1mm, not so popular.

i think u should just go by lens sharpness to decide instead of lens popularity. Read the reviews on www.photozone.de for more info. From what i have read, the sigma 17-50 f2.8 HSM OS is a pretty sharp lens that can be compared to canon 17-55 f2.8 but abit cheaper.

compared to the tamron 17-50 which is significantly cheaper but also quite sharp, the sigma is better but more expensive. if u think that the additional AF speed and OS does not justify the extra cost then just buy the tamron version
