Hi, I got a question:

Any idea which external flash out there can be triggered by Canon in built flash when offcamera without any cord/wireless trigger, so that I can use my on camera flash + the external flash off camera?
Seem like Nissin is capable..which else can I look at?
I search online till I am blur liao..

i think yong nuo flash also can act as optical slave

Okay. prob end of this week.. im now on the black step up ring.. the red ring got paint chips so i guess powder coating is not suitable.. will send it to those spray shops along defu lane to try if anyone is doing anodizing or something.. a form of dipping into the paint..

Bros i need your help in the purchasing of a extra backup battery for my 550d. is 3rd party reliable or should i get the canon one. I scare the camera will not read the batt life from the 3rd party one...hope to hear from you. thanks

Without a remote trigger or cord?

Saw that you have 430EXII..
Can it be trigger via the in built flash of 550D ah?

550D dont have a comander unit in it unlike D90.

so we need a trigger to do off camera flash.. like those Phottix..

Hmm..I tried the Nissin 622i at SLR Rev. I can trigger Nissin 622i using my in-built camera flash lehz...

James from SLR Rev told me only Nissin can be triggered by the in-built flash of Canon 550D.

But 622 doesn't support high speed sync..

Nissin 866i seems the only choice..wanna check if there are more or better options..

I dunno what did James@SLR do lehz...I just ask him which flashes in the market do that since I read that Canon speedlite cannot...

Then he brought out the Nissin 622 and try...
It seems like he just on some wireless setting on 622 and I just open my in-built flash and when I press the shutter, the 622 was also triggered.

I dun mind meeting for coffee..to try out ur 622..but I dunno what was done..=p & you stay in the East lehz...@_@ very far..hehe

If i'm not wrong, the Nissin 622 can be used as a slave flash right?

So you set the 622 to wireless mode(Read your manual if not sure). If i'm not wrong, the 622 will trigger only if it senses a flash(Through the red thing in front of the flash unit). So therefore when your 550D pop-up flash flashes, the 622 will flash too cos it senses your 550D's pop-up flash:)

I mentioned in the above.
I don't know what the sales person at SLR Rev. (James) did.

He did not let me hold the flash. He just press some buttons on the flash (he mentioned something abt setting it to the slave mode..), he did not even touch my camera.
Then when my friend and I bring out our 550D, open the in built flash, the 622 was triggered when we pressed the shutter.

That's all I know..
Maybe you can play ard and let me know if it really works on all other 622 as well?

Thanks for the clarification Cleon. Meaning that this really work.

If I am not wrong, you got a Yongnuo flash, right?
Is Yongnuo capable of such actions? or any idea if canon speedlites models are capable as well for 550D?

Yup,i own 2 Yongnuo flashes(A 460II and 560).Both are slave but not sure if Canon has this function too(Sorry i'm not Canon user):)

Canon speedlite not able to do so unless using you use a trigger.

Hmm...it's ok..Thanks :) I will try to find out more on this :)

Blueacidic, thanks for the info.
Is it right to say that if I use a speedlite as a on camera flash, I will be able to trigger another
speedlite off camera?

Yeah, if u want to trigger the off camera slave flash using the IR trigger within the speedlite, then only canon flash will work. if u want to trigger via optical method, any slave with optical slave mode will work

There are Canon speedlites capable of being a master and a slave (ex 580EX) and speedlites that can only be a slave (ex 430exII).

Check this link.

http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfaq/ex_speedlites.html

Just a quicknote, Canon speedlite uses infrared to trigger the slaves, capable of E-TTL, which will do pre-flash first to set the proper flash power. 7D has a built-in infrared trigger, you can also ST-E2 wireless controller to trigger the speedlites.

For Nissin Di622, it's capable of being an "optical slave", will be triggered using another optical flash burst, but not by infrared or other non-optical wavelengths. It has an optical sensor that will detect the optical flash burst. It has a bit of a problem with E-TTL's preflash and other bright light sources because the optical sensor gets confuse and can't tell which flash/burst/light source is the proper flash. For more details read the following.
