Official Canon 500D user Thread (part 2)

Hi Guys,

need some advice. my friend is selling off his 50D and I am thinking of taking over it from him. My main concern is the weight. It is almost 900g. I do travel often so this might a "little" problem. What do u fellow user think about upgrading? I need to top up maybe $500 max.
I love the faster shutter speed.

The way i see it is more of a downgrade rather than an upgrade. my very pov, no offense :)

Not sure what you actually meant by top up that amount. I assume it to be you pass him ur 500D, he will pass you his 50D and you gotta top up $500 max.
On this note, i would say that $500 or even a lower amount seems rather well.. expensive.

Hmm.. If the 6.3fps burst speed is a major pull factor and something you need, then why not.

No worries. I am curious why u say it is more of a downgrade. Enlighten me pls. :)
I do agree that it seems expensive but a 5D or 7D way too expensive for me right now.

For me, when i look at the similarities and the differences in the list below.. not a significant number of differences and for those differences, 500D doesn't really pale in comparison.

ISO controls seems somewhat better (personal opinion)
50D was released prior to 500D

I deem this as a downgrade as i do not need the advantages in a 50D. It doesn't justify the extra $$ i gotta pay for it and also lose the advantages of 500d tat matters to me :)

If you do find that the 500d is limiting you, do go ahead to get the 50d but do nego on the price you gotta top up. $500 or even $400 is too pricey i would say.

Similarities:
Same CMOS sensors APS-C 22.3 x 14.9 mm
Same resolution 15.1 MP and same pixel denisty
Same ISO setting
Same number of AF points (9 Point AF)
Same LCD
Same digic processor

Advantage of 50D:
6.3 fps Continous Shoot
Pentaprism (T1i has pentamiror)
Magnesium Body
LCD Indicator at the top of the camera
Faster AF as af points are cross type
More durable shutter

Advantage of 500D
Weight
HD Movie (though it's not a necessity but it is good to have)
Cheaper
Noise performance (I am not sure about it but I saw a web site at :: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T1i-500D-Digital-SLR-Camera-Review.aspx

500D is great Dslr, there are better one but this is able to do alot of wonder with photo. unless you have budget, this cam is decent to keep. or the newer model 550D :)

500d is madness! , it's more than just wonders!

i dare to say that it is "not decent"

i have been juggling around with so many systems and setups, and i really feel that 500d is extremely a monstrous camera even with the cheapest steup of just the body and a 50 1.8 without anything else!

the below are the above setup taken last year

this one above is taken with the default 18-55 kit, it's so freaking good until recently af spoil already aiyo Σ(゚Д゚;)

i have used 300d up till 550d and all sorts of xxd / xd / 1ds before, and in my honest opinion, 550d doesn't easily replace 500d other than the video function, i will still rate 500d as the best in the xxxd series in terms of quality and most importantly - the cost!

on another note

the below is taken with a 550d with 50 1.4 and personally i see not much of a reason to upgrade to a 550d from 500d if one is just taking photos really

and recently below taken with 1ds3 85 1.2 during last 2 week's event at suntec

more of my coverage on the event here

the colors, details and sharpness are definitely better but the weight for holding it all day long is a killer, unless one wouldn't consider weight then go for 1ds, otherwise a classic 5d is already fantastic!

i wouldn't go to 50d from a 500d in my opinion, the jump in features aren't great enough to consider

as my earlier opinion, it still the same. it is an upgrade. IQ wise, it almost same but if you look carefully on the review link by zelot, 50D is on the better side. since u noe wat you wan, faster shutter, it is a good reason to buy. oh one more thing, if u notice, it has better AF too. this is another plus point hehe

i will not comment on the price to upgrade :)

for me i will rather get new cam.

handstrap is cool のヮの

Hi to all the 500D users here.
I've been taking photos with my 500D and I loved it a lot.
Now I'm thinking of upgrading my lens.
Currently looking at the Tamron 17-50mm and comparing it with Sigma 17-50mm
But I do not know which to get. My friend is asking me to get a Tamron 17-50mm.
But I was wondering which is better. Tamron 17-50mm VC or Non-VC
After saw some reviews at YouTube. They said that Tamron had a lot of bad copies and even recommend the Sigma.
Can anyone give me some good advices?
