i have been trying to buy a used camera on buy/sell for the last week or two. however, i noticed there is this irritating habit of sellers (over PM) to imply to the buyer that the deal has been closed and then turn around and tell us (the buyers) some time later that the item has been sold.

i dunno if this is a normal practice (and if so i will shut up) but for goodness sake, either tell us "sorry, the offer price is too low" and end at that, or give us a chance to counter bid..!! i've been downheartened too many times when i thought i got the deal, and was gleefully looking forward to getting the item and then it fell through....

It's not MY normal practise, but being a public forum; you get the good, the bad...and the ugly.

From a seller's POV, here's my experience. After holding an item for a confirmed buyer for about 2 weeks, i finally get to meet the guy only to hear him say, "I just checked my account today, and i can only pay $XXXX. Can or not? I saw something today that i couldn't resist, and had to buy it". He even had the cheek to show off his new purchase!

My blood started to boil, but i kept my cool. He almost couldn't pay me the full amount that night, and offered to transfer the remainder to my account the next day (with him taking the equipment with him). Thank goodness his ATM card came through.

I'd like to take this opportunity to advise all buyers in the buy/sell section, that the agreed price is exactly that. You know you're going to purchase something, GET THE CASH OR MONEY ORDER READY! To arrive at a deal and have no access to ready funds is not a valid excuse. Worse! Don't expect the seller to be all smiles when you tell him you JUST HAD to buy something, and expect him to lower the selling price. That is TOTAL BS. :nono:

Had a seller once acknowledge to meet me the next noon and thus I would call him in the morning to confirm the time but instead when I called him, he sold the item for a few dollars more. Then he turned around to say that he never verbally agreed to meet me, and he just said that he was available after 2pm.... Talk about integrity and the understanding of "an agreement"... haiz...

I've learnt that next time... BE SPECIFIC.

happened to me recently..

buyer bargained price wif me to his offered price.. i reluctantly agreed..

then came his pm saying got problem wif cash flow.. and i need the $$ for some other purchase this wkends, which i promised another seller... :(

Haiz how specific can u get? Sometimes some buyers are jus plain shameless man. :thumbsd: I met a buyer who had agreed to the pricing of an item after much haggling. I refused to sell him at the price he wanted to and he agreed to it in the end. Before i left to meet him, i called and confirmed another time, he said ok and i went down. When i met him, i showed him the stuff and even gave him a free lesson on basic photography despite the fact that im really pressed for time. He simply know nuts about photography, nothing at all, zilch, jus know how to press a button with cam set to auto mode.

When its time to make the payment, he jus told me "$100 can anot?" I told him," NO, u agreed to $120 and that why i came down to meet u." He then had the cheek to say that was the only way to make me come down to meet him. Then he contd saying that all he had was $112 in his wallet and tell me to take the $100. I really felt like walking away man. But he jus said how poor and miserable he was, and wanted that thing badly. I said i will take $110 and forget about the other $10, but e refused saying he need to go back to dorm. We finally agreed that he settle the payment the next day by wiring the $20 to my account after much pleaing from him. Kaoz, the next thing i know when we went separate ways, he sent me an sms and told me that the thing i sold him is most probably a fake, and then conveniently sent me another sms which says " Actually im really very poor, and i have no one to borrow the $20 to return u, and i hate owing ppl money, how ah? U tell me how ah? " Wah lao, it really jus pissed me off till i felt like strangling him man. What does he expect me to say? To tell him " Its ok, u can forget about the $20 u owe me?" NO WAY MAN. And the fact that he repeatedly smsing me telling me that the item might have been a fake cos his pictures did not turn out as beautiful as the ones he saw in the internet pisses me off even more. Man that must have been the funniest **** i have heard in a long time. Its truely a classic case of "A poor craftman blaming his tools". He doesnt know how to use his digicam, PS and the new item he bought, full stop, why blame it on the equiptment that he purchased and said it's a fake when i did the demonstration before he accepted it. I replied him and told him its not the $20 that matters, its the principle and integrity of a man so its only right that he settle the remaining $20 like he had agreed to. He then asked me to stop reprimanding him and said that $20 only wat. no big deal, scared he wont return meh. I then asked him politely to meet me to exchange the item for a full refund but he seem to avoid that suggestion all together, bet he jus wanna pull a fast one. I really hate it when ppl jus point a finger at me and said i sold him a fake item all becos he wanted a discount. Till today, the money is still no where in sight. I sms him, no reply, call him, say not convenient and busy with project or some **** lah. All the buy/sell that i have done had been most pleasant. We buy/sell with no glitches or hassle/haggling and even make good friends, exchanging photograhy tips etc.

But of all the buy/sell this must have been the most shitty one :nono:
involving a cheapo who sold his integrity for a measely $20. Should never be too kind hearted. Sell him the stuff below 2nd hand market rate liao still not satisfied, wanna prey on ppl's sympathy and then try to shun payment. I have a soft spot for newbies cos i know how it feels like. He said he's poor and is a student, im a student too man, and i supplement my finacial needs myself too. If u cannot afford it, dont get involved in the first place, photography is expensive thats it, else, go get a job and u will have all the money u need.
Hope he is reading this now man.

Agree that some buyer are just shameless, after agreeing to price and everything, meet up and they say they must consider as it is BIG sum of money to them ???. In the first place they agree to price and ask to see item !!. From the beginning they already have no intention to buy and don't even want to step out of the MRT station to view a 1k item ???. Only want to see box and all. Simply just wasting people's time.

I think in everything there is a black sheep. There are also buyers that are good and I try to accomodate most of their request.

i think its just as simple as people (both buyers and sellers) honoring their word - whether verbal or written, and realize that its not ok to break an agreement.

in a face to face engagement, i dont think its likely that people will go back on their word, or lie, although some other have proven me wrong as i can see from other posts in this thread. however, in a forum where people are mostly anonymous, these kinds of ugly behavior will inevitably show up. maybe a rating system WOULD help.

I personally feel that sometimes buyers are just putting up "buy/sell" thread to find out how much their equipment worth. They don't really have the intention of selling it. I also think that there are people who are "seller" and "buyer" ie by creating multiple accounts, just to create confusion and horray. Always notice a couple of new accounts created. Hmm... highly suspioius..

thanks for all the feedback here. i have not attempt to sell or buy anything from here as yet.

From the tips, i think the next time if i do engage in sales, i wil probaby say to the buyer " Show me the money". before i hand the goods in his/her hands.

I think there are generally 4 groups of buyers/sellers here in CS:

1)First come first serve basis seller. You can't meet to deal and another can match rp + meetup, too bad. Some buyer also prefer this method.

2)First to meet RP, seller AGREE to hold and ignore further deals. If buyer backs out, post another WTS post again. Some buyer prefer this as more peace of mind?

3) Seller agreed to buyer RP and say will hold the item for buyer. But when buyer2 with higher price come along, decide to sell to the latter. Some buyers don't MIND too, as they too will backout when they find another CHEAPER deal.

4) seller posting not to sell but to check marker price and buyer quoting super low price to test seller.

Most of the time, we deal with whatever method/people comfortable to us.
