Not again.... 60D vs 7D

But isnt both of them on same range which is 17mm? I also wanted weather sealing. Thats why i paired 7d w/ 17-40

if you are looking at the superficial focal length, you might as well just go with the 18-55. just 1mm short of 17-40L but you gain 15mm more at the longer end, plus at just ~10% of the L-lens' price, spoil already just throw away then buy new one.

Get 60D alots of ppl say that it have better image than 7D (it a faster camera as got 2 processor) If you want to look more pro add on a battery grip, it make the camera look bigger and feel like a pros....

Lies. The 7D has the ultimate image quality over the 60D. First hand experience, trust me.

you're lying too. the image quality is THE SAME. the extra digic 4 chip is for faster buffering and fps.

and yes, i have first hand experience too. i own both the cameras.

I’m willing to bet if I did a blind test, 100% crops of 7D vs 60D, no one would be able to point out which is which. Regardless of the truth of the matter.

There’s probably more difference in Sony A77 vs NEX 7 due to the translucent mirror, than any 60D vs 7D shots.

If I'm in your situation, I'll stick with my current equipments and wait till 7D II is out :) Save more $$$ buy a good lens and good body at the same time =p

stick with ur 40d system, unless u need the video function. else i suggest u to go for 7D

I second the 7D. I came from 60D and was not quite satisfied with so upgraded to 7D. Now just dont know yet if going FF is the way to go, since i got EF lenses.

Get the 60D, keep your tamron. Spare cash for external flash or lens.

40D is a good camera. Still using it, paired with 17-40L. To me lens is more impt than body since I don't shoot sports

Was making a similar decision some months back. Decided to go for the 7D as I shoot events quite often, so speed is important for me. The following are some other reasons I favoured the 7D over 60D.

Pros of 7D compared to 60D:
* Much bigger and brighter 100% 1.0x viewfinder - many people seem to overlook this very important feature.
It's much more comfortable to use and better for when you're waiting to capture the right moments to take a shot while viewing through the finder.
* Much better AF system - I'm not just talking about AF speed, but rather the advance AF selection system in the 7D. You can select a different AF zone/points separately for when it's horizontal and vertical. E.g. I like to use the Zone AF and set it to the area nearest where people's faces will appear in the viewfinder.
Compared to the antiquated 9-point AF in 60D, the 7D's AF system is far superior, and I'm loving it!
But of course if you only use the centre AF point all the time, then there's no diff.
(To learn more about the 7D's AF system, refer to Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Review and scroll down to the relevant section.
* Easier to switch to video mode. Trivial but important to me.
* Uses CF card. This is a pro for me but may be a con for some.
* Additional Multi-Function button next to the shutter release, primarily for FEL.

Cons of 7D:
* No articulated LCD screen. Would have loved to have that, for shooting videos and weird-angled shots.
* It's quite heavy and bulky

Between the 17-40L and the 17-55, my own take is that the 17-40L is a much better value for $$.
It's lighter, more compact, better built, weather-sealed, cheaper and I suspect, gives better colour rendition.

If you want a good walk-around lens, can consider the 15-85. The extra 2mm on the wider end makes a lot of difference!

both are made for different purposes. 17-40L being a UWA for full-frame sensor while the 17-55 acts like a 24-70L on crop sensor.

i have no qualms about recommending the 17-55 for crop body because it is faster than the 17-40L and has IS. the con is that the 17-55 lacks weather sealing and is more expensive than the 17-40L.

using the 17-40L on a crop sensor imo is a total waste of the lens' ability to see things in ultra-wide angle.

to TS. suggest you go for 60D with 17-55 2.8. reason being, yes many of us will have the itch/urge for a better body, but at the end of the day, lenses are important too. a good 17-55 on the 60D will produce good images, plus the 2.8 as opposed to the f/4 will definitely be useful. the 17-55 is known to be a king for cropped sensors, do give it a good consideration if you're not planning to go ff soon.

If you shoot events/sports often, get the 7D with a 15-85mm or 17-40L? You get a great cam and a good lens.

If it's for normal everyday shoot, the 60D will suffice. But I would still recommend the 15-85mm. It covers a better range and is cheaper, lighter and more compact than the 17-55. IQ is about the same. I think the 17-55 is overpriced and over-rated, now that there's the 15-85mm.

im fan of 15 85 as well..
its a nice lens...nice FL and really useful...(for me)

For cropped body users, if you're in dilemma to decide whether to get 17-40 or 17-55.
My personal advise is 17-55 if you foresee that you're not upgrading into FF system for future or at least for a very long time.
Do not get 17-40L over 17-55 just because of the L status & red ring.

I agree on what akszaksz mention. Go for 17-55 if you on crop body.
15-85 is a good traveling lens where 15mm can take nice wide angle.
17-40 L is really good on crop body i used it before on 400D and 7D then FF 5DMKII so if i am on crop only i will get 17-55.

I am presently divided between 60D and 7D as well. As i am keen on buying a good condition 2nd hand unit, price is a secondary consideration only.

What's pulling me away from 60D is the so called automatic exposure compensation thingy. did my hands on, mostly overexposed at bright sunlight at iso100. i havent really went through the settings but overall a good camera to consider.

I also did my homework, research a bit.

What's pulling me away from 7d is actually 60D's swivelling screen. You never know when it can be useful. I once owned a Canon S5 with the swivelling screen, didn't really utilize it.

anyone can offer me a layman explanation of the 7D's 19 point AF versus 60D's 9 point? be gentle to me :embrass:

i'm not sure how layman is considered layman, but I did have a go at my friend's 7D. the number of 19 AF points is really advantageous.
plus, you're able to select different modes (group of nine, etc) within the 19 AF points. you can also see the AF point automatically focusses on moving subjects.

on the other hand, using the 60D, the 9 AF points seems to be enough, but sometimes you'll need the extra "in-between" AF points for the composition.

hope that helps..
