Cheques are not a very safe idea if u r freelancing. That is why I have learned to sign a contracty with them to safeguard my own interest. In this case, if they dun pay up, u can always bring them up to court.

as a freelance , we should get paid after every job , some company may tell u that they dont have the policy for payment on the spot . well it up to individual weather to take a chance from there , in my case before i take up a job i will tell them cod. I dont believe company cant even $100-$200 right . As a photographer , u pay for transport , some even take uppaid leave to take up the project. it should be fair that photograhers should be paid on the spot . Right

well hope someone could come up alist of black sheep companies . so that we can check the job bf doing . Some thing like Property which they have a list of black sheep agents . or somthing Like cases . at least it would cut down the no of non paying client. Well at least their name is known , then the clients who employ them to do the job also know what sort of company there are .

Incentive, thats pretty much the only way.
Write in the contract that if they pay within 2 weeks of the actual shoot date, then you give them a 5% convenience discount.
Most companies know they have to pay anyway, so they'll pay quick and get there $71.50 (average job cost) in discounts, depending on of course how much the job costs. Even a small job, you'll give them say a $12 dollar break on it. And I mean whats twelve dollars you think to yourself, well what's two minutes to have your accounts people draft up the check today instead of tomorrow?
Some clients will be to busy or won't have there act together, and will take longer to pay. And those guys miss out on the discount, fare and square.
Generally speaking, most people will pay you damn quick for the discount.
Oh and the people who don't pay you, but publish your work anyway, well stupid them, because they can get into heaps of trouble. Well again depending on what your contract states.

For weddings, cheque is acceptable on the AD itself. If collection DVD/prints, its cash on delivery.
I derive my income from other means as well (freelancing got many levels actually), but nowadays I don't even reply emails or offers from event companies, or those F small timing jobs like 3-hr wine tasting session, company celebratory events etc. They will ask you if their companies are small (ie trouble trouble!), or if they are big they won't even ask you, coz they'd have their own regular photography company doing everything from glamour shots for their topmanagement -> D&D -> forum group photos -> press release intranet circulation etc. So don't waste your time buddies.

Yah I totally agree with bro vinc. Since that company has the guts doing all those shits,and we also have the guts to post their company name. Nothing wrong right ? Coz they start it first ,so dont blame us. Or maybe disclose in PM or what ever..

You can try searching on the Net for such sample contracts (if they exist) - but there's a reason why people pay money for lawyers - for peace of mind and properly drafted contracts. Those samples you get may either:
1. Not suit your needs.
2. Make you think it says what you want, but does not as situations differ.
3. Be copied from other samples which may or may not be legally sound.
I think however, that writing in plain simple English does the trick most of the time for those who are not able to pay for a lawyer's services. Don't really require legal jargon or legalese.
