non-L lenses

I agree with gundamseed84. Might as well top up for the 50 f/1.4 and only used to own the f/1.8 II. The 50mms are all very gd primes and eye-view lenses so u can't go wrong with them. If u're more on portraits then get the 85 f/1.8 as IQ and overall performance are rather impressive too.

Different lenses depends on yr type of usage so it's subjective.

No 50L? ;)

Both the 50L and 85L focus at glacier-slow speeds, which could be a detriment to events shooting if you aren’t used to it.
Not true for the 50L, at least not for the current version. I find it focuses just as fast as the EF50f1.4.

Sigma ultra wide lens are also something interesting to look into. 12-24 is so wide on FF and 8-16 on crop is also as wide.

Recently i bought the EF 15mm fisheyes lens 2nd hand and i find it very good in sharpness and resolution.

That's the reason why I bought The 12-24, cos there are no other UWAs for FF as wide as this lens.

Yeah, the 50L is speedy which is not similar to 85L II due to their larger and heavier glass elements.

50L's AF speed is snappy.

hi guys my current set-up are:
-5D mk II
-24-70 f2.8L
-580EX MK II

I am thinking of trying prime lenses but kinda short of funds at the moment. through my search on the net and watching countless reviews.. it seems that the 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 are both very highly regarded non-L lenses.

anyone here uses them? what are your critiques on these lenses? and what other prime lenses would u recommend?

thanks :)

85mm f/1.8 is great lens.

as for the 50mm f1.8, since it is so cheap, just get one n try..

My non-L primes: 50F1.8, 85F1.8 & 90F2.8

Then your experience is very different from mine, the 50L is pretty slow relative to the Sigma 50. I would put it at best on par with EF 50 1.8

Maybe the difference why some people find the 50L ‘snappy’ while I personally felt it took long to lock focus is because of the “focus shift issue”

For me, it wasn’t that the AF didn’t move fast, it was that it hunted to get focus, more so than 50 1.8, 50 1.4, and sigma’s 50. I guess that gave me the impression as “slow”.

I was fortunate to have a gd copy despite many here are complaining of the focus shift issue. My set was direct from japan and works like a charm!

I use both the 50L and the 85L, now using the 85L for most of my sports shots on a 1DSII. If AF doesn't work, you can always use MF.

Mine is the current production. Perhaps you should try out the new stock and see.

Hi, may i know why is the EF 24mm f2.8 a gem? I am looking at 28 f1.8 as i am looking to get a wide angle prime too. Thanks.

If you look at that focal range then your options are 20mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.8, 28mm f/2.8 and 28mm f/1.8. Out of these lenses 24mm is the best, based on many reviews and comparative studies.
I do have a 35mm and hence 28mm does not make much sense to me. I would prefer to have the 20mm but it is not so nice lens. ... so finally left with 24mm http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/images/cs/smilies/teeth.gif

Thanks for the reply. I have tired the 35 f2 before, i must say its one good compact lens to use. Just that the bokeh isnt good enough.

Considered using old manual primes: nikon, vivitar, olympus, pentax? my primes other than the 15, 24 & 150 are all manual adapted primes. Cheaper and gives your pictures a different feel to it. The Vivitar 28 is on my 5D2 most of the time, and it cost me $400.
