[nitewalk] Trailing

The first long exposure I had taken when I picked up photography was of traffic trails. It has always interested me how these headlight and rear light leaves light tubes which makes the night scene so much livelier and interesting. Hence, the theme for this thread will be on light trails unlike the more generic thread in the land/city-scapes section ([nitewalk] Beauty of Our Lion City).

Road to Riches

A shot made some time ago. It doesn't have the normal size which I post on CS. Therefore, I posted a smaller version. This was made after dark and subsequently about a year later, I went back during the blue hour to reshoot the same scene (#2).

Whirl

A little different kind of light trails, not that from vehicles.

Light Bends

Nowadays, I normally invert a GND filter to control the exposure of the road in order to increase the contrast between the road and the trails. The markings on the roads are somehow quite reflective, which I find will find for attention with the light trails.

Interesting project on light trails. :)

Just a tip. Try taking light trails from airplanes. Well, though it's nothing new as a local photographer has done it. He did it on film (I think) with multiple long exposures. I thought you might try to approach this at a different angle/perspective. Would be great to see your new work. Good luck and have fun. Cheers! :)

Hi Martin, thanks for the visit and encouraging words. I had thought of doing the light trail of the vertical bungee at Clarke Quay but did not work out the way i thought it would so need to rethink. Will find some time during december to try the airplane idea! Thanks! Never thought of the idea :)

Interesting concepts, something that i wish to venture into.

What lenses are you using for most of your night shots? 16-35mm F4?
Are you considering other light trail other then cars?

Hi Gnabster, thanks for visiting my thread. Light trails are quite common and many people in other countries do it as well. Indeed, this is an on-going project which I am working on, hopefully to collect the Singapore cityscape with the concept of light trails.

I am using EF 17-40 f/4. Btw there isn't 16-35 f/4 for canon. But any type of lens can be used to capture light trails, just depending on the situation and circumstance.

Originally, my project is to capture mainly traffic trails as it is the most suitable to be associated with the fast pace of our city life. However, I added boat trails and the rotational trails by the Singapore Flyer. Additionally, I am considering what Martin had offered earlier, that is to capture airplane trails, but I am still thinking because it is unlikely to fit my concept of capturing it with the city as backdrop. I will not include human trails as part of my project as it is not light trails (even if one dons a light-emitting vest).
