Nissin i40 flash

Hi guys I'm a newbie in using flash. Recently purchased the nissin i40. Like to know how come when I use the auto mode there are three flashes instead of one quick flash. How can I obtain just one single quick flash instead of getting two rapid small flash before going off with a bigger flash. Hope you guys can help out. Thanks

In auto mode, the flash will throw some light into ur subject (right before the shutter open), measure the intensity of the reflected light with the light sensor built-in the flash.

The best is to use TTL mode, where it'll use the camera's sensor for much better results, but sometimes u do need to use manual flash mode for better control.

AFAIK, even TTL will have burst flashes before an actual flash is made cause it needs to read the light before it can determine the exposure, so there's no way to get 1 big flash unless you shoot in manual which trust me, you wouldn't want to mess with if you want quick results

Yup. I know that. Thanks for clarifying.

From what I could tell, the "Auto" mode on my i40 doesn't behave like "Auto thyristor" mode in older flashes, as I don't think it has a in-built light sensor. It seems like i40's "Auto" mode essentially is TTL mode with the flash EV settings disabled. So I hardly ever use it on "Auto" mode because it offers no benefits over TTL mode.

Manual mode is ok in a controlled setting, but like what spider89 side in a dynamic situation it's not so practical.

I'm sorry. Do u mean it's not practical to use i40 to shoot in auto or TTL mode?

I do understand I get more control over flash power and consistent results in manual mode.

I meant in dynamic situations not so practical to use Manual mode if the subject distance (direct flash) or ceiling distance (bounce flash) keeps changing. But in a controlled setting, e.g. posed portrait shots, then Manual works better, more consistent as you have said.

Anyway regarding the pre-f;ash I felt that the i40 pre-flash is a bit more laggy compared to Nikon i-TTL that I used before. Not sure if it's i40 fault or Olympus TTL system.

Never felt any lag when using Olympus and their flashes for a while though, looking at pictures from Nissin, i40 has an auto mode and TTL, is it true? Anyway Hikkaru, why are you bothered with the small flashes prior to the main flash?

Question: When buying a i40, is there various variant for diff models of cameras? Say Canon/Nikon etc. Reason is i chance upon 1 that state that is for canon only. Wonder if it can fit my em1

Probably can physically fit, maybe can fire in Manual mode, but the TTL modes will def not work due to different system protocol

There r different hot shoe mount for the TTL.

Just reserved 1 from slr. Gonna collect later. I am gonna take the jump and venture into external flash, lol.

I missed clubsnap, haven't posted here for a long time.

I promise I will stick around this time. Maybe will join in the la-kopi session if time permits. Btw, I was quote 223, I am guessing should be the right price.

Damn. Just realise I missed the la-kopi session. Just. Lol.

Oh its because my human subjects tends to blink cos they may b expecting just one main flash

Got to tell them to force their eyes open then :bsmilie: I remember back when cameras weren't so "mainstream", people tend to move after they see the first flash

Anyone using eneloop xx for their flash?
