Nissin di866 vs canon speed lite 580exii

Hmm as I’ve recalled to use 7D commander with Di866 requires a firmware update but that does the trick. This is what I’ve read others say during the research phase of my Di866. I have not updated my firmware nor have a 7D to verify this.

The Di622 is only triggered optically, so rule it out.

I'm not sure about that. To prove that it works, you need to test it out with the updated firmware. For me, if it works, I too wouldn't mind settling for the Di866 as it is cheaper. Though said, currently I'm using the wireless function with my 580EXII, whereby the trigger is from 7D's pop up flash.

Do feedback here on your test with Di866 on 7D's Speedlite Wireless Commander.

Yes, the prob is I will have to get my hands on a 7D (which I might one day) and then go update firmware at their CSC (which I will once I get a 7D). Anyway I dug up the place I saw it. It’s a CSC email by Nissin (copy paste from the site):

"Reply from Nissin (HK)

Thank you for your email and support to Nissin.

Please kindly see below for reply:

1) The firmware already done but now still waiting some downloading process to complete. The estimated releasing date will be in the beginning in next year. But at first stage, the firmware update need to be done by our distributor. For update by users themselves will be available in next March.

2) Because Di866 was launched to market early than 7D. Therefore, the current Di866 is not support 7D commander (built in flash – new function of Canon DSLR). It is necessary to do the update for this part.

3) The information on Japanese website is only suitable for Japan market. Please kindly refer to globe website if you are staying outside the Japan.

4) Di622 supports Canon 7D.
Remark: Di622 actually is designed as triggered by light (the DSLR cameras with pre-flash system in slave mode). Not radio (wireless).
Therefore Di622 can be only used as slave ( off camera ) but not as a master ( on camera ). And you can use any DSLR cameras
with pre-flash system in slave mode to trigger it.

Thank you very much & Have a happy holidays.
Nissin"

Thanks for the information.

off topic : the grammar really sucks >.>

hmmmmm thanks
i didn't know that :)

one more questions
what function does the Di866 NOT have while the ex580 does?

Mainly 580EX2 have a shorter recycle speed and the ability to connect to an external battery pack. For built-wise I would reserve my comment and let the Nissin users tell you more about it.

don't think so.. 866 do have the external batt connection ready for use.. built wise definitely not there (compare to both the SB900 and 580exII) but i'd say it does it's job.. i find the sub flash particularly useful..

first thing first,

cons of 580,
-e-ttl2 sucks, big time. when it produce acceptable results, both nissin n metz produce better.
when e-ttl got problem in coping( mirror bg situations ), nissin n metz's Auto works (canon Auto is a joke).
-connector, funny something so price, with some many users claiming superior build, its connection with the cam is its weakest link.

pros of nissin,
-when u can't bounce, the direct is the best of all 3, guess size matter.

pros of metz,
-its the elinchrome of hotshoe flash (not Bron, nothing is :) ).

with regards to recycling speed,
i shoot wedding mainly,
without ext batt, all 3 r ok.

Definitely the Di866 plastic is not as good as the 580exII. Nissin’s plastic looks a bit more shiny, but it is still way better than those cheapo sunblitz flash that sort of build. I think overall the Nissin’s build and feel is quite professional. You don’t feel like you’re buying a cheap knock off but a quality gear.

It can be used with a Nissin external battery only.

Oh, the Nissin is also noisier in zooming than the canon.

sorry, realised my post is misleading. I meant e price i paid for e 866 is atleast 50% cheaper than 580EXII. the 500+ dollar refers to e add-on amount to e price of 866 to get one 580EXII. Hope nw clarified the statement =)

Totally. Haha. Well It’s probably legit as it’s badly grammatised as only a company like Nissin can :)
is nissin a china company?? haha

for the part in red
i just read that someone in CS had his 580 II fall off his camera during a photo shoot even though the lock has been locked and secured

where to buy nissin flash? :embrass: Sorry, I could not find in the canon price guide :P

So weird. I could not find the booth at the IT show some more :|

thankss!

make your way to Funan

there's quite a few shops selling it

can the Di866 be trigger by the PT04 II wireless triggers?

Well Nissin has a USB port and promises firmware upgrades even with new cameras. Thus far they have kept to their word, with the 7D firmware update. Remains to be seen if they will update for the 550D
I have no issues with Di866 with my 550D.

550D  + + :o + ;(

anyway the nissin 866 is selling at $390 at SLR revolution when i asked them a week ago

I believe in Auto mode, Nissin 866 is up to 100mm while 580exII is up to 200mm.
bot it at SLR revo for S$390. works with my 500D even when it's off camera. Able to trigger it with my pop-up flash. I had to power down 1/3 stop as it's a bit too bright.

Yea it seems that the firmware update for the 7D is for the Wireless commander feature. The 550D which doesn’t have that doesn’t need any update. Cool reverse engineering by Nissin then.
