Ninja 2 from Atomos

Maybe you can drop by with your camera to the distributor here to test your DSLR with the Ninja..

I think the Ninja wont be suitable for weddings etc but in general I think its a good buy in terms of costing and functions wise.

I agree ... U should go down and test it out ...

But just a general idea to give you: NO Canon DSLR has clean HDMI out ... Not even 5D3 or 1D.

If you have a Nikon D800, you are in luck because i read somewhere its clean. Maybe for the new D600 too.

Don't forget the audio lag of the D800 I mentioned several posts back. If that is not resolved you might end up with a lemon. Does the Lemon Law cover this :bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

Yes, that is why I also felt that the combination of DSLR + Atomos is risky. Safer to get the VG900

So you're thinking of DSLR + Atomos or VG900... Why not VG900 + Atomos Ninja? Both DSLR and VG900 are compressed formats right?

VG900 uses AVCHD mpeg4 while dslrs uses h.264 mov. If you're not going to do some crazy post grading I don't see the reason to get an atomos ninja with the vg900.

Yes, I think so too. That is why I have more or less abandon the idea of getting the Atomos Ninja (as it is too risky & lack of "sureness") and instead get the VG900.

Actually, have you done grading on Raw or even 4:2:2 color before?

The learning curve is not for first timers and if you don't even grade much, there is no point for atomos regardless of all the 'unsure' or 'risk' because you haven't seen the benefits of uncompress footage to compare to all these factors we are talking about ...

I think the answer is pretty clear. You do not need this product. If you can't tell the difference between ProRes 422 and Normal H.264 formats then no point getting it. Maybe in the future you will realize the differences but for now don't worry too much about it. Spent the money on something useful. A lens perhaps

you don't really need to shoot raw for these works. Get a good wireless mic system and you are good to go.

Prores 422 uses interframe compression similar to DVCPRO HD. It is not uncompressed.
Uncompressed data rate = color depths x vertical resolution x horizontal resolution x refresh frequency

For example:
24bit @ 1080i @ 30fps :24*1920*1080*30=1.39Gbps.
24bit @ 1080p @ 60fps :24*1920*1080*60=2.78Gbps.

You will need some serious disc space and processor to handle that.

Wow, that means the uncompressed video will need disc space of 2.78gb for every 1 second of movie !

That's really huge & no wonder you said that only a serious processor can handle that !

Uncompressed is preferred for colorists working on feature film, TVC, MTV.
The rule in broadcast is: compress as far downstream as possible.
