Ninja 2 from Atomos

Hi all, what you guys think of this Ninja 2 ?

http://www.atomos.com/ninja2/media/ATOMOS-NINJA-2-4pp-0912.pdf

Thanks

My friend has a Samurai and he's pretty happy with it.He bought it from the distributor here. I guess the Ninja would be good for D800 D4 users and cameras that only have HDMI output.. Read somewhere that even the GoPro Hero2 used the Ninjas for their advertising footages in NAB..

Thanks Blackmidnight for your post.

What I meant to ask is this. The reason why I wanted to get a video camera over taking a video using DSLR is because of the 29 mins limit on the DSLR.

So with this Ninja 2, correct me if I am wrong, now the problem is solve, I do not need the bulky video camera anymore because with Ninja 2 connected to DSLR problem is solved !

Video experts here, please comment whether am I correct or wrong ?

Thanks

Actually looking forward to getting this but the price is too high. The ninja is only compatible with D800? Will it work on D600?

Follow the comments in this post: Nikon D600 – Nikon’s worst “best camera” ever?

There's some confusion about whether the D600 is able to output a 100% feed to the Ninja.

But there's also an update with a link to this video: https://vimeo.com/49862540

"Here’s a video of Jeromy Young (the illustrious CEO of Atomos – maker of the Ninja) showing the D600 + Ninja 2 combo working at 100% at Photokina:"

thanks for the clarification! time to save up!

External recorders like Ninja, Samurai, Black Magic Hyperdecks and Nanoflash will take in signals from cameras as long as the HDMI output is clean. Canon 5D Mk 2 and 3/7D fail because Canon has scrambled the signal to produce a dirty feed (you get cadence, and fields, etc which are basically unusable unless you clean up the footage using avisynth script) GH2 used to have scrambled feed as well, until Panasonic released firmware v1.1, 25p is now clean, but 24p needs alot of post work to clean up.

I understand D800 produces uncompressed 4:2:2, 8 bit signal, which is lovely, and something that the Ninjacan transcode to Prores to give you pristine IQ even though the source is only 8 bit. Sony A99 as well, am sure D600 as well. These are the new breed of DSLRs that are aimed at filmmakers like myself, who ultimately want their content to be viewed on a big screen. But these cameras are also expensive.

How do we know whether the camera has clean or "dirty" HDMI output ?

In the specs, they usually juz say, output - HDMI.

They wouldn't say: "Output - HDMI Clean" or "Output - HDMI Dirty", right ?

HDMI signals that are not clean mirrors what you see on the LCD. It will include all the information you see for example on a typical EVF or the LCD viewer at the back of the DSLR.

In this youtube video you can see the guy transferring his video from Nikon D300 onto his TV. You can see all the LCD info being mirrored to his TV. You don't want that recorded to your Ninja 2.

Yeah but how do we know whether the camera that we wanna buy gives clean hdmi before we purchase them ?

I see where you are coming from. It seems that nobody has yet compiled a list of DSLRs with clean hdmi out. ATOMOS has a list of supported cameras but they are mostly videocams:
http://www.atomos.com/ninja/camerasupport.pdf

It is in their interest to have a list of DSLRs compiled. They should already know which camera is compatible. The fastest and surest way perhaps is to shoot an email to their sales support to ask for such a list.

The next best alternative is to google for 'cleam hdmi', a list of new DSLR reviews with clean hdmi will pop up but you have to go through them one by one.

Update: More info for you but the latest DSLRs are not yet mentioned.

What you should know about the Nikon D800 Audio Delay:

Again I assume the ATOMOS info may not be the latest. Perhaps Nikon has already solved this problem?

Maybe it is just safer to buy the VG900 ?

Atomos ninja is suitable for film making. Not for your usual run gun events, wedding.

Too much trouble and danger. Example like someone or yourself accidentally touching the hdmi cable which on dslr are known to be unstable connections.

The gains on 4:2:2 color are not to die for unless its for television or broadcast. Which, in that kind of jobs, you should be using an fs700, c300 or BMC instead of dslr + Atomos.

I'm not sure what market they are targeting now with the launch of cameras that do raw at $3000 which is way better for color correction.

Any peeps out there care to share your scope of videography for using Atomos + dslr and not a proper video camera? Good to know for everyone out there.

Firstly it is a much cheaper option. Considering DSLRs and the lenses for it is cheaper than cinema ones.

A lot of movies and television shows are using DSLRs to shoot now. Simply because it is light, versatile and cheap.

Yes, its cheaper. But we are not in 2010-2011 anymore. With the launch of BMC & more to come cameras which are affordable. How would Atomos providing 4:2:2 be better than raw?

We are talking about the future of atomos (for those who wants to invest in one). Where does it stand?

Movies (like Transformers) use DSLR for car crash scenes cause they can't destroy their RED EPIC or Alexa for just 1 scene.

TV shows (like 'House') use it as an experimental piece to show that its never about the camera, to make a good show.

DSLR film-making trend has peaked and will only slow down with the launch of BMC, FS100, VG900 (+more to come) which are not priced in the RED EPIC range so it still affordable.

So, would an atomos make sense for (maybe) D800 users, cause currently, its the one that supports clean hdmi out?

But having risk of disconnection from lousy hdmi connections and basically anything out from HDMI can be at risk from glitches?

Do advice. Thx

I think, for my purpose, I agree with XsenseX.

The setup for Atomos may be too risky as we do not know for sure which camera works & which doesn't.

Would be an aweful feeling if after spending the money, only to realize that the combination doesn't work.

I dunno about others but for me, I think it is safer to get the VG900.

What you think ?

Thanks

If you know how to handle exposure during filming, between ProRes 422 and Raw, there is hardly any difference. Between those 2, raw handles better during post.

I'm not sure what cameras Michael Bay uses during the explosion/crash scenes but it's definitely not DSLRs. I think they want a higher fps camera to handle those scenes in case they want slow motion footage. DSLRs still cost money, they don't just crash a car into it. They used production cameras even in explosion/crash scenes, using metal cases and sandbags to protect the cameras. Saw it in the BTS video.

The atomos is designed and set for prosumers that wants a cheap and lightweight rig. Many film makers has been dying for this tech. I am not sure about disconnections, if you were to take care of the ports and tie your cables correctly i'm sure it would still work very well.

As for the VG900, it's around the same price for a D800+atomos ninja. But the ProRes plays a slight advantage over the AVCHD. But Sony has accessories like the XLR kit that makes them more of a better choice.

Maybe you can drop by with your camera to the distributor here to test your DSLR with the Ninja..

I think the Ninja wont be suitable for weddings etc but in general I think its a good buy in terms of costing and functions wise.
