Nikor 50mm f 1.8D on D60

Focusing on the D60 with this lens using the rangefinder makes everything easier, as i use this lens most of the time about 90% of my shots are spot on. :)

I played around with the D60, but i cant remember how the rangefinder works. Is it lightyears ahead of my D70? The green dot in the d70 viewfinder appears over a range of focusing distance.. which tells me MF is likely to be inaccurate

I'm also looking to trying out MF on my d40 with 50mm/1.8 but im afraid I cannot handle it. Lol
do update on how your manual focusing go ! :)

For D40, I would suggest investing in a split image focusing screen. A 3rd party one should be available for around $60 at Orient Photo. Not sure if other shops like TCW would carry something like that. KatzEye would be very expensive.

Sorry to all, didn't log in for quite a while. I find it hard to make the green dot stay on constantly not like in AF. Maybe need more practice with my 18-55mm len. As for the range finder, need to experiment and understand more, will keep all posted soon...

Maybe just forget abt the 50mm f1.8...there is a brand new AF-S 50mm f1.4 coming :)

and that would be similar to sigma30mmf1.4. SIGH.

I have tied the range finder feature and is quite useful, already thought of buying the 50 mm len but now someone mention of the new AF-s len:bigeyes:. Anyone know the price between the two? Doesn't it make sense to upgrade to D80 and use the older version:think:

AF-S 50mm f/1.4
• $439 (US)
• £280 (UK)
• €383 (EUR)

So you're looking at S$614 to S$714 based on today's exchange rates.

A new AF f/1.4D is $440 and a f/1.8D is $180.

to complicate things further.... use that $600 to buy a used d50 + AF 50 1.8. hold 2 dslrs. problem solved. no need to change lens, no need to MF.

joking...

my experience:

i have some 1.4 lenses b4, but most of the time i don't shoot wide open. yes, 1.4 comes in handy at times, but that is just minor. i usually shoot F2++. and to be honest with u, to date, the best buy i ever had was a cheap made in China 50 1.8.

i have a d60 also. i MF the voitglander 58mm 1.4 on it. but i seldom use the rangefinder, i use the green dot instead. with a day of practice, i got the hang of it. it's not difficult, really.

i will turn the focusing ring to "near in-focus" then my turning slows down to fine tune it. most of the time, my eye is focusing at the subject, not at the rangefinder or the green dot. well i mean, how big is the d60 viewfinder anyway? you should be able to see that obvious little green dot there without focusing on that dot instead of the subject.

remember, its the subject that matters, not that green dot. u MF to put ur subject in focus, not MF for the green dot to appear. the green dot should just be a confirmation of in-focus (serve as a check only), and not the main purpose for u to MF.

psychobiologist had written an article on MF recently. maybe u can check it out.

I'm also thinking of getting the 50mm F1.8 for my D60. Why F1.8? Due to budget loh...heehee...but want a good 50mm lens to shoot protrait shots. But will be shooting my kids most of the time I guess, so scare that MF will be too slow as I am a super newbie on dSLR. The AFS 50mm F1.4 is tempting but is $$$$$$$$$....got a low budget now.

haha. same here, d60 with 50mm f1.8
on low budget especially for a student like me.

Turn on the rangefinder display and use it. Don't worry, you won't be able to AF with the 50mm anyway. ;p I have no problems with 50/1.4 on the D60.

is it the one with left n right arrow, in addition to the green "in-focus" dot?

seems like not all nikons have this

Nope.. It's using the metering EV bar to give indication of focus. It's much better than the >o< found on the higher end bodies.

wow.. good stuff!

damn.. i wonder how to even get the >o< on my d300. d300 seems to be just one O

I am using AF-D 50mm F1.8 and even an old 105mm F2.5 on my D60. I love it. I get better results with MF rather than AF. :)

Just needs practice for a day or two and you'll get it.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Yup.. That's why KRW is saying that the rangefinder display on the D60 is way better than the single digit pro bodies.

u will need lotsa practice. and u will be frustrated in the process.

i had more satisfaction using 50mm reverse mounted for macro:bsmilie:

part of the reason i upgraded was because there was no AF. and i'm glad i bought the D40x because it gave me excuse to upgrade. had i started with d80 then i sian already:confused:

my suggestion to u, treat it like low light situation. i would fire off a few shots while rocking back n forth to get focus. yes, i will admit i buay steady:embrass:

Solid lens but I couldn't really use it for photoshoot as the model would havta wait a while in that pose for me, on good days I use it. That's my experience but it gives good image though.

so the manual focus is hard to get the shot right and nice?

 maybe i rent 1 and try it out first.
