aaah .. I've thought about it, and I think I get it. So if a photographer only owns a 50mm lens, that is his ideal lens line-up. Nothing else would be better than 'ideal' .. it's all he needs. It is ideal after all.

So when I have my back up against the wall trying to fit the group into the frame, I shouldn't curse my luck and wish I had a wide-angle lens ?? Because .. I have a 50mm lens and that is ideal.

And when I see those distant specs scurrying about on the sports field, I shouldn't wish I had a telephoto zoom to bring in the action a little closer, since my 50mm lens is ideal.

maaaan .. I wish I had had this insight years ago. You could've saved me a ton of money instead of splurging on the lenses I own and use. Silly me ... for I already had the ideal lens line up 20+ yrs ago when I bought my first SLR with a standard lens.

Err... I thought you got it, then I re-read and wasn't sure you weren't being sarcastic about the backing up and telephoto things... But no I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

I think you're about getting it. But it's an issue of if you don't own it, you can't use it. An "ideal" 85/1.4 lens wouldn't be any use to your photography if you don't own one. Take good pictures with the equipment you own.

There's a distinction between what I'm saying, and asking you to not yearn for new lenses. New lenses are all well and good, and by all means save towards getting them, but in the mean time, your ideal should be whatever you own, or whatever's in the camera bag you have with you at that moment in time, for that matter.

Put another way. Say I'm out and I have my camera and three 2.8 zooms. I spot a wildlife subject and think, the ideal lens would be the 400/2.8, but I don't have that on me and I've left it at home. In which case, my ideal lens becomes the 70-200. You could consider it a poor substitute, but I prefer to advise you to think positive; based on what you have available to you, the 70-200 *is* ideal.

actually i just need one...

AF-S 15-500mm f/2.8D IF-ED VR DC PC which weighs under one kilo and has a thread size of 77mm. oh and uses the normal Nikon 1.4x and 2x TC.

too bad it doesn't exist...

Why not the AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8 ED-IF?

Agree with Yellow Tang on this one, but can't afford the lens so juz make do with wat I have now which is quite " ideal" to me.
