Nikon Speedlite for my S2 Pro?

If I understand it correctly..

TTL (Thru The Lens?) will actually monitor to flash as it firing and adjust if require during the actual shot (increase or decrease power)

D-TTL (Digital) fires a pre-flash to judge the scene, then fires the actual flash. You will not notice the preflash as it fires it in such rapid succesion to the actual flash. D-TTL cannot adjust the flash once it fires however

The S2 is based on the F/N80 body from Nikon. Fuji was able to continue using the TTL flash system.

Nikon however whose D100 is also loosely based on the F80 is using DTTL. Most say however that DTTL does not work as well.

D-TTL was introduced by Nikon starting from the SB28DX Sppedlite flashes for their DSLRs because of the lower reflectivity of their CCD as compared to the surface of film. It's essentially a *simplification* of 3D-TTL.

3D-TTL (or plain TTL) and D-TTL works by having the flash emit several (nearly invisible) monitor preflashes, which are bounced off the subject and detected by sensors in the camera to determine correct flash exposure.

TTL goes on further to also meter flash exposure during the actual flash burst.

D-TTL however, does not meter during the actual burst and relies only on the data from the monitor preflashes. As such, if the subject distance / lighting changes during this brief moment, flash exposure may not be spot on.

The S2 does not support D-TTL, because it doesn't have to. The Fuji engineers must have somehow made the SuperCCD to have the reflectivity as film.

I think it's good that you keep your options open. Probably reading up the comments from users at the DPReview's forums could help a lot. The Metz 54MZ-3 does look like a very interesting flash and the secondary deflector(?) would be handy in some situations

Flash is suppose to be difficult to master. Don't expect to just stick it on and have great output. You need to learn how to use the flash. If you have done any reading on Thom Hogans website (www.bythom.com) he has dedicated books on how to master Nikon flash. He is also suppose to have a book dedicated to mastering the S2 out in the near future. I think both should be worth the investment..

Thanks Mike once again for your reply and link. I dont have problem getting decent images using the SB80DX. Pretty neat flash i must say. Built in bounce card, included omnibounce and stuff are just great. Not forgetting the very nice, soft and padded case for it. I think its a great speedlite.

As for those books you've mentioned. I'll definitely try to get them soon. Theres just so much i dont understand of my S2. :embrass:

Oh something i've realised by chance. If you're taking portraits with it and find the skin tone abit off.....try switching the color setting from standard to original. It helps alot.

1. Use only ISO 320 & 400.

That's because the N60 body that the S1 is based upon can only calculate TTL exposures for ISO values up to 400. In general, all Nikon bodies have a top end for TTL calculations, and you need to be aware of what that is, as most bodies won't stop you from setting something outside the range. That's especially true with the S1, which has separate digital and camera controls.

Good to hear the 80DX is working ok.. If there is not a flash for my Bday then I will be on my way to John 3:16 to buy one

I am waiting patiently for the Books from Thom as well. There has been so much positive feed back from the D100, D1, D1X etc that I am sure the S2 book will be great. I am quite comfortable with the camera.. I just got to start making full use of it.... "Its not a point and shoot, Its not a point and shoot"...

To be honest I am not much on the local coffee eh... A little thick for my blood (I like to sleep at night ;-).. But if you offer a coke... Then we have a deal... Can? I guess I should mention (as I have before).. I am not some all knowing guru.. I am just a lucky guy who managed to sell enough other toys that I could get the S2. I spend a lot of time reading the forums, reviews, and other media's on the S2, and photography in general. It is something I fell in love with just a few short years ago... But I am quite dedicated to it and love to learn.

Most weekend I am free and can escape the wife for at least a few hours. Although this weekend is turning out to be a wash.... Work is calling... I hate working weekend! Oye! Maybe the following weekend

And dont you worry. I'm not wanting to make friends with you cos i think you're some guru whom i can rip knowledge off. Its the making friend part that i enjoy most. Especially with totally chill kind folks like yourself.

I'm a baby when it comes to photography. Probably wat? 5 months? I'm just lucky to have such an awesome camera thats all. This explains my lack of knowledge for most things rite? Hope you understand.
